Topic 7 Discussion 1
Learning Needs
One of the most activities that should be accomplished before lesson development is learner needs assessment. Assessment of learning needs entails finding out what the learner already knows, what the learner needs to learn, and what they are capable of learning. Such a process is important since the nurse educator is then able to determine the best teaching strategies which can support the achievement of the set objectives (Bastable, 2021). Learning needs assessment also helps the nurse educator to choose the right teaching and learning materials. The topic for the lesson plan is incorporating cultural competence in patient-centered care. As such, various aspects will need to be assessed related to the chosen topic for the lesson plan. One of them is their existing knowledge regarding cultural diversity. The other aspect is their level of knowledge regarding culturally competent care and its use in patient-centered care.

It will also be important to obtain demographic information to help in the better development of the lesson. Some of them include education, marital status, gender, ethnicity, race, and age. The information on ethnicity, race, and age will particularly be important since they can impact an individual’s knowledge of cultural competence and cultural diversity (Sharifi et al., 2019). Such information can be obtained using various tools such as surveys. It will also be important to collect other important information regarding the learners. It will be key to collect information regarding the years of experience, which is also the number of years served in the nursing profession. This information will also be important in designing the relevant teaching and learning content connected to cultural competence and its use in patient-centered care. It will also be important to have information on whether the learners have engaged in the care of patients from different races and ethnicities.
