Strategies for Academic Portfolios
Nurse scholars can build their portfolios to add value to their brands. Nurse leaders who are new in the field can impress potential employers with their knowledge of quality improvement and patient safety methods, mistake prevention, and cooperation by compiling a portfolio of their work. An individual’s portfolio can be used to distinguish their expertise as a Certified Nursing Leader from that of a bedside nurse. Academically, a portfolio can showcase proof of competency through the presentation of the student’s work, and professionally, it can help the certified nurse leader convey specific skill sets that can alter bedside nursing care (Grant et al., 2020). There are many ways to present your academic and professional achievements to a prospective employer in a portfolio. The utilization of social media is a novel and well-liked tactic when it comes to building one’s portfolio. Educators and hiring managers frequently use social networking sites like LinkedIn to learn more about prospective employees and to facilitate students’ education. Potential employers often check out candidates’ social media profiles to learn more about their personalities and work ethics.

Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are just a few social media platforms that can either help build or demolish nurse scholars’ portfolios. They can benefit professionally if they discover methods to use social media as a teaching tool to promote the nursing profession. You can demonstrate initiative and leadership by creating a Facebook page to help other MSN students. Sharing your successes on social media is a great way to boost your resume, but it also gives potential employers a glimpse into your personality and the things that are most important to you outside of work (Daphney et al., 2020). Healthcare leaders who want to develop a strong brand cannot rely just on commercials and lists of achievements to connect with patients on an emotional level. We need to convince our patients and prospective employers that our values and beliefs set us apart from other nurse leaders and nurse leader hopefuls and that our individuality makes a difference to them.
Another way to build an academic portfolio to help nurse scholars professionally is through the collection of documents that show evidence of your nursing knowledge and competency. One document that I was proud of completing and have saved for the purpose of my portfolio is my Capstone project that I completed in my BSN program. Other documents that I saved for presentation in my portfolio are awards that I have received, such as a nomination for Pediatric Nurse of the Year and a research document that I presented for a healthcare organization on the need for nurses to avoid medication errors in their duty. I have used this research paper as evidence of competency in an employment application, and it was useful in proving my nursing knowledge in the subject. These strategies will help me achieve my professional development goals that are in line with the university’s emphasis, as there will be the provision of legal documents to certify my credibility in nursing (Gilliss et al., 2021). I believe I will achieve my goals in this profession by properly building my academic portfolio through social media platforms and collecting essential documents.
