SOCW 6361 Week 11 Discussion Paper
Ideology, politics, and the influence of values often override evidence-based policy. When there is evaluation conflict, a policy advocate must be prepared to defend his/her reasons for wanting to implement a policy. Because almost all proposed policies are circumscribed by politics (for reasons brought up by Jansson throughout the course when discussing the subtleties of policy implementation), you should be prepared for some conflict, ranging from having your research ignored, to having the accuracy of your data questioned, to having your personal values brought into question. In this Discussion, you consider the assertion that the evaluation of specific policies is often strongly influenced by values. You also examine and evaluate ways to mitigate evaluation conflict to defend the feasibility of your policy.
By Day 3
Post a response to Jansson’s assertion that evaluating specific policies is strongly influenced by values with respect to the case of the evaluation of special services. How do the values of evaluation conflict adhere to social work values? What practices would you use to defend the feasibility of and effectiveness of your evidence-based policy? please use the latest apa reference and citation
Discussion on Evaluation Conflict
I agree with Jansson that a policy advocate is very crucial for the defending the reasons of implementing an evidence-based policy since many challenges may arise including people questioning the data presented, as well as others ignoring the research results presented. Besides, evaluating particular policies must be influenced profoundly by values, as many may question them. The evaluation values abide by social work in various ways that include worth and dignity of the person and minding the significance of human relationships in social work. Evaluation conflict also considers social justice as, in some cases law may be perceived unfair by victims. In some cases, some of the social workers may feel underrated and taken for granted and despised in one way or another by others and thus feel that justice is not being upheld.
Defending the feasibility of and effectiveness of the evidence-based policy would include several practice and steps. Firstly, distillation and creation of research knowledge are very paramount. There is also a need to partner with professional opinion leaders for dissemination and diffusion of information gathered (Sanderson, 2011). By doing so, helps in making the research look great and increase its value as well as many convincing people to like and adapt the policy as defended. These practices also help in defining and clarifying the research done and issues that may not be clear to other people who may require the information. The policy needs to have a clearly defined purpose for accountability and for others to understand with ease. Based on well-analyzed conflict, clear causes, changes and pioneers of the conflict as well as the harm caused need to be addressed in the research, that will help in leading to a lasting solution (Speakman & Ryals, 2010). However, a clear understanding of the conflict being evaluated is very paramount.
