PRAC 6531: AGPCNP Clinical Skills and Procedures
The American Nurses Association (ANA) defines gerontological nursing as an evidence-based nursing specialty that focuses on the aging process, health protection, and promotion (ANA, 2010). Thus Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioners (AGPCNPs) require patient- and family-centered care competencies (Bickford, 2018). AGPCNPs encounter older people in various care environments and must have versatile competencies to manage the situations they will face (Bahrami et al., 2019). The purpose of this assignment is to conduct a self-assessment of my clinical skills, discuss my strengths and areas of weakness, and outline my goals and objectives for this practicum.

Summary of strengths:
Based on the Self-Assessment Form, I realized that my strengths include conducting clinical exams and assessments. For instance, I can confidently perform assessments like breast exams, digital rectal exams, gait and balance assessments, mental status exams, and integumentary system examinations. I attribute these strengths to working in a medical-surgical unit and ED department as an RN, where these assessments are the order of the day (Li et al., 2021). In addition, I can perform some procedures without supervision, like I&D abscess, pap smear, wound care, suturing, injecting local anesthetics, and removal of foreign bodies, warts, skin tags, and ticks.
|
Opportunities for growth:
I identified areas that need improvement, especially in collecting specimens for diagnostics and interpreting diagnostic results. Therefore, I will need to practice more in performing various diagnostic procedures like Biopsy, cerumen removal, Fluorescein stain of the eye, and Herpes culture. Furthermore, I need to practice more on interpreting diagnostic results, including EKG 12 lead, CXR, lab tests, PFT, and general radiology reports. One of the roles of an NP is to order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests (NONPF, 2012; Tohmola et al., 2022). Thus, I will need to improve my competency in these skills by the end of this practicum.
|
Now, write 3–4 possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMARTStrategy, as described in the Learning Resources.
1. By the end of this practicum, I will have ordered at least 20 appropriate diagnostic tests for adult and geriatric patients. 2. By the end of this practicum, I will have interpreted at least 15 laboratory and radiology reports for adults and geriatric patients with various conditions. 3. By the end of this practicum, I will have used a peak flow meter to assess and manage at least ten patients with airflow limitation disorders. 4. By the end of this practicum, I will have performed a visual and eye exam for at least ten older adults. |
Conclusion
The self-assessment exercise revealed my strengths and areas of improvement with regard to performing clinical skills and procedures. My major strengths are in performing clinical assessments used in patient physical exams. However, I identified areas for improvement in performing diagnostic procedures and interpreting lab and imaging results.

CLINICAL SKILLS AND PROCEDURES SELF-ASSESSMENT
Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills, such as those for advanced practice nursing.
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Procedures List and Resource Review and FNP Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Form or Adult Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) Clinical Skills Resource List and AGPCNP Clinical Skills and Procedures Self-Assessment Form provided in the Learning Resources can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The lists cover all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum course.
For this Assignment, you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for your practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills and procedures.
In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep adult health guidelines and best practices in mind.
