Discover Evidence Based Data Used in Clinical Practice

Purpose:

This Assignment is helpful in developing the groundwork for understanding and integrating evidence-based practice in healthcare throughout the rest of the course. In this Assignment you will have the chance to see how the research you look for can be applied in the work you do in your practice.

Overview:

You will select a topic relevant to your practice area, post the topic to Discussion Board 2 for feedback, research the topic, and write a scholarly paper.

From the chapter readings and discussion, formulate a 3–5 page scholarly paper in APA format, providing an overview of the terms and function of EPB. An introduction, discussion, and conclusion are expected in the overview on this topic.

Directions:

1. Formulate the question.

2. Using the Cochrane database, research the question using the PICOT model and key words.

3. Post your topic and a short summary of results for feedback from your instructor and peers.

4. Write a 3–5 page paper, reviewing evidence-based practice, as it relates to your practice question and integrate feedback from the instructor and/or peers.

5. Include a minimum of three evidence-based references.

• Respond to the questions in a thorough manner, providing specific examples of concepts, topics, definitions, and other elements asked for in the questions. Your paper should be highly organized, logical, and focused.

• Your paper must be written in Standard English and demonstrate exceptional content, organization, style, and grammar and mechanics.

• Your paper should provide a clearly established and sustained viewpoint and purpose.

• Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful.

• A separate page at the end of your research paper should contain a list of references, in APA format. Use your textbook, the Library, and the internet for research.

• Be sure to cite both in-text and reference list citations were appropriate and reference all sources. Your sources and content should follow proper APA citation style. Review the APA formatting and citation style found in the Writing Center. To access the Writing Center, select this link. P (population): patients diagnosed with a terminal illness
I (intervention): early integration of the palliative care team and palliative care conversations by the interdisciplinary team
C (comparison): early palliative care discussions and advanced care planning vs. minimal conversation coupled with aggressive treatment options
O (outcomes): opting out of aggressive treatment and improved quality at the end of life
T (time): the last 6 month of life
In patients with terminal illness, what is the effect of early palliative care conversations by the interdisciplinary team compared to minimal conversation coupled with aggressive treatment options on the quality of the last 6 months of life?

Background Information: What is preventing patients and providers from discussing palliative care sooner during terminal illness? Perception of palliative and hospice care has long been viewed as “bad” or “the end” and research shows advanced care providers can break this barrier by having open communication with their patients.

Foreground information: Does introducing palliative services/discussions early produce anxiety with patient and family? What other barriers are preventing these conversations from happening with terminal patients? Can providers help patients understand their diagnosis better to enable them to have an improved quality of life by implementing palliative care?
