Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotate Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
Over the last several years, technology has significantly changed the nursing profession. Hospitals are still being inundated by the large number of patients they encounter each day as it changes. Front-line nurses will be able to better serve their patients by using the most recent developments (Cobelli et al., 2021). Although there are advantages and drawbacks, technological advancements continue to change the medical industry. Telehealth is one such new use of technology in nursing practice. This paper aims to locate peer-reviewed articles that support the use of telehealth to raise nursing standards of quality and safety.

Telehealth
As per my observations, more nurses are required to provide frontline care as the field of nursing continues to develop, which causes many of them to become overworked. The advent of telehealth in nursing has made it possible for nurses to do their duties in a more accessible and effective manner. Telehealth is currently used more often to address the nursing shortage, even though many nurses are accustomed to visiting patients in their typical hospital settings (Sharifi Kia et al., 2022). It enables nurses to treat more patients while maintaining the highest standard of care. I looked up the PubMed database in the Capella University Library and typed in the search keyword to learn more about the role that telehealth plays in strengthening the safety and quality of the care that is delivered. I was able to find several articles by using search phrases like “telehealth,” “telenursing,” “patient safety,” and “quality of care given.” I narrowed the search to just publications posted in English in the previous five years and found the four articles mentioned below.

Rademacher, N. J., Cole, G., Psoter, K. J., Kelen, G., Fan, J. W. Z., Gordon, D., & Razzak, J. (2019). Use of Telemedicine to Screen Patients in the Emergency Department: Matched Cohort Study Evaluating Efficiency and Patient Safety of Telemedicine. JMIR Medical Informatics, 7(2). https://doi.org/10.2196/11233
Rademacher et al. (2019) carried out cohort research to examine the both effectiveness and patient safety of in-person screening against telescreening. The statistics from the research show that while telescreening had poorer efficiency early on in the trial period as measured by how many patients are seen each hour, by the end of the pilot project, telescreening had caught up to the efficiency of in-person screening. When compared to prior data, adding telescreening on weekdays between 1-3 a.m. considerably decreased the percentage of patients who left without being seen. This study reveals that Telescreening was a reliable and secure method for this emergency department to improve the amount of time a healthcare professional screened a patient during triage.
Sharifi Kia, A., Rafizadeh, M., & Shahmoradi, L. (2022). Telemedicine in the emergency department: an overview of systematic reviews. Journal of Public Health. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10389-021-01684-x
Sharifi Kia et al. (2022) conducted a systematic assessment of the literature on systematic reviews to offer an overview of the advantages and limitations of using telemedicine technologies in the emergency department. According to their results, there is considerable evidence that the use of telemedicine improves patient care. However, several obstacles to telemedicine implementation may stymie the process or even jeopardize patient safety. Despite the enormous potential of telemedicine systems, there is still a need for improved quality data to demonstrate their usefulness in the ED for healthcare providers.
Wong, A. K. C., Bayuo, J., Wong, F. K. Y., Yuen, W. S., Lee, A. Y. L., Chang, P. K., & Lai, J. T. C. (2022). Effects of a Nurse-Led Telehealth Self-care Promotion Program on the Quality of Life of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Journal of Medical Internet Research, 24(3), e31912. https://doi.org/10.2196/31912
Wong et al. (2022) conducted a systematic review to compile information from randomized controlled trials examining the impact of nurse-led telemedicine self-care promotion programs on community-dwelling older adults’ quality of life (QoL), self-efficacy, depressed mood, and hospital admissions in comparison to standard on-site or face-to-face services. This meta-analysis shows that telehealth may be used in nurse-led self-care promotion programs to help older people, but more studies are needed to strengthen the evidence base, particularly in terms of planning and delivery.
Kwok, C., Degen, C., Moradi, N., & Stacey, D. (2022). Nurse-led telehealth interventions for symptom management in patients with cancer receiving systemic or radiation therapy: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Supportive Care in Cancer. https://doi.org/10.1007/s00520-022-07052-z
Kwok et al. (2022) performed a comprehensive evaluation to assess, in terms of health service utilization, quality of life, and symptom severity, the efficacy of nurse-led telehealth symptom management treatments for cancer patients undergoing systemic or radiation therapy compared to standard care. Few studies have looked at nurse-led telemedicine therapy for cancer symptom management, the researchers found. When compared to patients receiving normal care, those receiving telemedicine therapy had less severe symptoms and no difference in how often they used the hospital. Therefore, healthcare professionals should focus their next research on accurately describing intervention aspects and regularly tracking outcomes.
Summary of Recommendations
Key Learnings
The reviewed publications collectively present evidence that supports the efficacy of telehealth utilization by nurses in various specialty areas, including the emergency department, for enhancing the safety and quality of care delivered. As exemplified by the findings of Rademacher et al. (2019), telescreening demonstrated comparable efficacy to in-person screening, while also serving as a viable and secure method for expanding the screening hours provided by healthcare professionals in the emergency department. According to Sharifi Kia et al. (2022), the utilization of telemedicine was found to have a positive effect on patient care. According to the findings of Wong et al. (2022), the utilization of telehealth within nurse-led initiatives aimed at promoting self-care among older adults has been shown to yield favorable outcomes. Kwok et al. (2022) presented findings that indicate a potential benefit of telehealth interventions in comparison to standard care. Specifically, they observed a decrease in symptom severity among patients who were exposed to telehealth interventions, while also noting no significant difference in the utilization of health services.
Organizational Factors
The choice of suitable technology for the healthcare context is influenced by several organizational considerations. Workflow-related, patient-related, policy and regulation-related, culture- or attitude- or social-influence-related, monetary considerations, evidence basis, awareness, and user engagement are some examples of these elements (Cobelli et al., 2021). Workflow modifications included adding telehealth to staff tasks, as well as outreach, education, and training. As a result, employing and deploying technology like telehealth includes making financial decisions. These include infrastructure, personnel, and training costs, as well as the need to balance them with reimbursement. It is also important to take into account government regulations that encourage the use of technology in hospitals depending on the current state of practice. Other elements including utility, usability, design, compatibility, technological difficulties, content, personalization, and convenience are linked to practitioner acceptability.
Implementation
The data presented above demonstrate that telehealth may improve patient satisfaction and engagement while delivering comparable health outcomes to more traditional healthcare delivery methods without jeopardizing the patient-nurse relationship. According to Rademacher et al. (2019), early initiatives to incorporate telemedicine into emergency care focused on tying smaller emergency departments (EDs) to larger EDs and providing remote consulting services to EDs with inadequate resources. Numerous EDs have used telemedicine in response to the continuous ED overcrowding to increase the number of physicians during spikes in patient visits and provide scheduled face-to-face, on-screen consultations from “home.” The study’s findings suggested that this ED may use telescreening to enhance the number of hours that patients were screened by a healthcare provider during triage. Since I work in the emergency department, I would support expanding the use of telemedicine to lessen the need for on-site healthcare workers who may be exposed to infectious diseases. It also saves time and personal protective equipment (Sharifi Kia et al., 2022).
Conclusion
The ongoing advancement of technology has had a profound impact on the field of medicine, yielding both advantageous outcomes and notable obstacles. The implementation of telehealth in the field of nursing has facilitated nurses in performing their duties with enhanced accessibility and efficiency. While nurses are accustomed to encountering patients within the traditional hospital environment, the utilization of telehealth is increasingly prevalent as a means to alleviate the scarcity of nursing personnel. This technology enables nurses to effectively manage a larger patient load while maintaining high standards of quality and safety in their care delivery. Due to the persistent issue of overcrowding in EDs, certain EDs have implemented telemedicine as a strategy to augment the number of healthcare providers available during periods of high patient influx. This approach also enables the provision of scheduled “home” face-to-face encounters through on-screen interactions.

Collapse All
Introduction
This assessment will give you the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of how technology can enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. You will prepare an annotated bibliography on technology in nursing. A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.
Preparation
Before you begin to develop the assessment, you are encouraged to complete the Annotated Bibliography Formative Assessment. Completing this activity will help you succeed with the assessment and counts towards course engagement.
To successfully complete this assessment, perform the following preparatory activities:
• Select a SINGLE direct or indirect patient care technology that is relevant to your current practice or of interest to you. Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients. Electronic thermometers or pulse oximeters are examples of direct patient care technologies. Indirect patient care technologies, on the other hand, are those employed on behalf of the patient. They do not require interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. A handheld device for patient documentation is an example of an indirect patient care technology. Examples of topics to consider for your annotated bibliography include:
o Delivery robots.
o Electronic medication administration with barcoding.
o Electronic clinical documentation with clinical decision support.
o Patient sensor devices/wireless communication solutions.
o Real-time location systems.
o Remote patient monitoring.
o Artificial intelligence.
o Telehealth.
o Telestroke.
o Tele-icu.
o Tele-psychiatry.
o Tele-genetics.
o Workflow management systems.
• Conduct a library search using the various electronic databases available through the Capella University Library.

• Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
o What is your rationale for selecting this particular technology topic? Why are you interested in this?
o What research process did you employ?
Which databases did you use?
Which search terms did you use?
Note: In this section of your bibliography, you may use first-person since you are asked to describe your rationale for selecting the topic and the research strategies you employed. Use third person in the rest of the bibliography, however.
• Annotation Elements
o For each resource, include the full reference followed by the annotation.
o Explain the focus of the research or review article you chose.
o Provide a summary overview of the publication.
According to this source, what is the impact of this technology on patient safety and quality of care?
According to this source, what is the relevance of this technology to nursing practice and the work of the interdisciplinary health care team?
Why did you select this publication to write about out of the many possible options? In other words, make the case as to why this resource is important for health care practitioners to read.
• Summary of Recommendation
o How would you tie together the key learnings from each of the four publications you examined?
o What organizational factors influence the selection of a technology in a health care setting? Consider such factors as organizational policies, resources, culture/social norms, commitment, training programs, and/or employee empowerment.
o How would you justify the implementation and use of the technology in a health care setting? This is the section where you will justify (prove) that the implementation of the
patient care technology is appropriate or not. The evidence should be cited from the literature that was noted in the annotated bibliography.
Consider the impact of the technology on the health care organization, patientcare/satisfaction, and interdisciplinary team productivity, satisfaction, and retention.
