Domains and Concepts: Domains for Nursing

Now that you have completed your baccalaureate in the nursing program of study, do you believe you meet the expectations of the Domains of Nursing?

After finishing my degree, I believe I met all the expectations of the different domains in varying degrees and will be able to provide a higher quality level of care with the knowledge and skills I have acquired. As some of these concepts are new or have been explored on a deeper level this semester, I believe my future nursing career will allow me many opportunities and challenges to build upon these newfound skills and knowledge. I am continually learning and building upon my current nursing practice, challenging myself to be better and do better for myself, my patients, and the future of healthcare.

Domain #1 Knowledge of Nursing Practice

When providing care to my patients at the hospital, my nursing practice is evidence-based, focusing on that organization’s specific mission and vision. During our coursework, we explored our workplaces’ mission and vision statements and different nursing theories to support our projects. When implementing new policies or procedures at work, we discuss nursing theories relevant to supporting changes. Knowledge is the basis for making informed decisions, sound clinical judgment, and providing high-quality care.

Domain #2 Person-Centered Care

I enjoy bedside nursing and enhancing my skills and knowledge to provide the best possible care to my patients and families. Understanding a patient better is rewarding when I know their values, culture, and beliefs. Again, this is something we explored during the BSN program, allowing patients to navigate their plan of care as I educate and guide them along the way. Researching ethnicities and learning about their values, cultural beliefs, and approach to a healthy lifestyle is a more holistic approach and can help provide better outcomes.

Domain #3 Population Health

Our project this semester explored population health on a deeper level. Exploring Bridgeport’s community health gave me insight into the deficits and assets of healthcare in this community and how vital it is to become involved in my own community on a local, state, and national level to advocate for improved equity for all. It opened my eyes to the opportunities offered to me and how they are not readily available to all. It is imperative to stay current on current healthcare laws and stay involved to help fight for those rights and resources for all.

Domain #4 Scholarship for Nursing

Nursing scholarship has been utilized consistently in my associate and RN-BSN programs. Learning the skill of finding research articles, summarizing the articles, and then using the pertinent information to support the projects assigned. This skill has been helpful when looking for the most up-to-date evidence-based practice when making policy changes, specifically in my Capstone project. My preceptor and I reviewed articles to find the most current evidence to support our changes to the Oral chemotherapy policy at Bristol Hospital.

Domain #5 Quality and Safety

Patient safety and quality of care are number one. Utilizing research articles and evidence-based practice to implement policies to prevent falls has been a current topic at my organization. Working with my interdisciplinary team to improve the quality of care and safety, such as the pharmacy. Pausing when a medication or dosage looks incorrect, contacting the pharmacist or MD to review, and educating patients and families about the drug. Considering any barriers to learning and establishing a treatment plan they understand and can follow. My responsibility is to minimize the risk of harm to my patients, especially regarding medication. Essentially, I am their last line of defense.

Domain #6 Interprofessional Partnerships

This domain is vital when working in the hospital. Interprofessional partnerships work to treat the patient holistically, not just a specific focus on their medical condition. I feel this was addressed in the projects assigned to us, working in groups to complete the assignments. It helped us focus on our collaboration, communication, and accountability skills, all of which I utilize daily at work.

Domain #7 Systems-Based Practice

Providing treatment to diverse populations is again something that has been addressed throughout this program. Individualized care rather than treating everyone the same. The project on different ethnicities and their beliefs broadened my understanding and knowledge of diverse populations. This has come up recently at work with our transgender population and being knowledgeable about their specific care needs.

Domain #8 Informatics and Healthcare Technologies

The application of technology in current healthcare cannot be overlooked. History taking, patient vital signs monitoring, and drug prescription all depend on technology. I was keen on learning these skills throughout the clinical rotations to provide efficient and safe healthcare. I learned how to record and retrieve data from the Electronic Health Records accurately. This involved communication of already registered data with other healthcare workers and updating the records with new data. I also attended technology workshops in hospitals aimed at helping healthcare workers to develop skills in technology when providing care. Additionally, I took an online course on healthcare informatics to stay up to date with all the advancements on the use of technology in healthcare. I have confidence that with these skills, I will be able to provide patients with the highest quality of care and stand out as an excellent worker in the field.

Domain #9 Professionalism

Throughout my time in school, I have been passionate about developing a sustainable nursing identity, embracing accountability, and collaborating with others while considering the critical values and characteristics of nursing. I was eager to learn from the older nurses by asking them about their experiences during their extensive work period. I have also embraced self-assessment and reflection to help me identify my areas of strength and those that require improvement. I recognized that I have excellent communication skills and need to be more accommodating of other people’s views. I also learned the importance of considering professional boundaries while providing patients compassionate care that considers their preferences and needs; this has enabled me to forge therapeutic relationships with my patients, which are essential for achieving effective health outcomes. Generally, working hard, committing myself to development, and continuing to learn from others has helped me achieve this competency.

Domain #10 Personal, Professional, and Leadership Development

Personal growth has been an aspect that I have always embraced in my school and personal life. I have always learned from my past and made the necessary adjustments to ensure that I do not repeat the same mistakes and that I capitalize on my strengths to achieve the best results for myself and the patients. Throughout my education, I have taken the opportunities to develop myself professionally, such as interacting with others who have been successful in the field and learning from them as mentors. I have always been physically active and embraced healthy eating habits; this has been essential for my growth. I also set time aside to meditate and spend quality time with my family and friends, as they are imperative to support systems. I have also ensured that I remain updated with the latest findings in nursing by attending conferences and reading relevant journals.

Describe when you realized the work required for the degree was of value to your professional practice or not?

Sometimes, I would contemplate whether the work I was engaging in during my clinical rotations was of value to the nursing degree. I was skeptical about how to apply the theoretical concepts learned in class to the real world. The clinical rotations’ experiences helped me realize their value to the nursing degree and my future practice. I gained more confidence by implementing interventions based on the scientific evidence we learned in class. I gained better clinical decision-making skills and a deeper comprehension of the relationship between the classwork and real-world application.

The theoretical concepts came in handy when dealing with patients suffering from complex illnesses that required critical decision-making. For instance, when dealing with patients who have diabetes, the concepts of providing compassionate care and implementing a multidisciplinary team to meet their needs were vital. Providing holistic care that considers the individual’s physical, cultural, and psychological needs were also crucial in providing standard care to them. Effective communication skills learned in class were vital in helping me collaborate with the healthcare workers and patients to ensure that the services offered were high quality. Therefore, the theoretical foundations of the coursework and experiences from clinical rotations help the students achieve competencies that inform their professional practice.

What value, now or in the future, do you see in having completed the BS in Nursing degree?

Having completed the nursing degree, the competencies achieved will help me to remain productive now and in the future. I am now able to provide my patients with high-quality, evidence-based care. The clinical experiences garnered during the study of the degree helped me to gain a solid understanding of the skills needed to meet the needs of patients across the continuum of care. My skills in assessing patients are planning for their health are top-notch and can help me to secure a job in any healthcare setting. Other essential skills, such as communication, collaboration, and decision-making, are replicable in other areas of life. These skills will put me in a great position to take up leadership roles in different organizations. There are also opportunities for professional advancement and growth after completing this degree. Specialization in the realms of nursing that I am passionate about will help to stand out from the rest of the workers in giving excellent patient care.

Domains and Concepts: Domains for Nursing

Domains are broad distinguishable areas of competence that, when considered in the aggregate, constitute a descriptive framework for the practice of nursing. These Essentials include 10 domains that were adapted from the interprofessional work initiated by Englander (2013) and tailored to reflect the discipline of nursing. Each domain has a descriptor (or working definition) and a contextual statement.

The domain designations, descriptors, and contextual statements may evolve over time to reflect future changes in healthcare and nursing practice. Although the domains are presented as discrete entities, the expert practice of nursing requires integration

of most of the domains in every practice situation or patient encounter, thus they provide a robust framework for competency-based education. The domains and descriptors used in the Essentials are listed below.

The domains and descriptors used in the Essentials are listed below.

Domain 1: Knowledge for Nursing Practice

Descriptor: Integration, translation, and application of established and evolving disciplinary nursing knowledge and ways of knowing, as well as knowledge from other disciplines, including a foundation in liberal arts and natural and social sciences.
