Theoretical frameworks utilize theory constructs to provide the rationale for interventions and activities in projects and research. Dorothea Orem’s Self-care Deficit Theory is the theory of interest in this proposal. The theory holds that individuals should be self-reliant and responsible for their care and that of their families. Individuals are capable of complex functions such as preventing illnesses, fighting off some illnesses, and only seeking help when they cannot meet these needs. The theory holds that nursing is the art of helping and providing service for quality patient outcomes (Yip, 2021). According to Orem’s theory, nursing interventions are implemented where patients require complex services they cannot provide independently. In addition, personal knowledge is needed for success in promoting self-care behaviors. Moreso, individuals are considered healthy after providing adequate self-care requisites. The theory requires nurses to reflect upon their practices to develop interventions that holistically meet their patients’ needs. Nascimento et al. (2021) note that according to Orem’s theory, nurses can act on behalf of the patient, with the patient, or through empowerment through education to improve patient outcomes, hence the interplay between the theory and advocacy.

Application of Theory to the Study’s/Project’s Focus
The theory focuses on bridging the gaps where patients cannot help themselves. The nurse should create an atmosphere that increases patients’ ability to meet their needs, or nurses help them meet these needs. Opioid overdose can be a result of addiction or accident. In this research, the intervention is to increase access to naloxone, a medication that addresses opioid overdose problems. The medication is an opioid antagonist administered to suppress the depressant actions of opioids. Its access will promote individuals’ ability to manage the opioid overdose problem. Advocating for naloxone availability in drug stores and rapid administration of the drug (ensuring it is not a prescription-only drug) are evidence-based nursing interventions of interest. These interventions will help reduce opioid overdose-related deaths and emergency department visits (Smart et al., 2020). The theory’s construct of nursing and nursing interventions will thus greatly inform this project’s focus. Theoretical frameworks are thus significant in ensuring the relevance of interventions.
