Professional Nursing and Level Regulations

Professional Nursing and Level Regulations
The nursing profession enjoys the highest level of public confidence. Their work is crucial to the health and well-being of their patients, and it covers a wide range of responsibilities. Because of the gravity of their position, nurses are subject to oversight by a Board of Nursing (BON). A body of law governs the profession of nursing in each state. The Nursing Practice Act (NPA) is the law governing the practice of nursing in the United States (Yang et al., 2021). The NPA ensures that all registered nurses are not only capable of doing their jobs but that they do it to the best of their abilities. In addition, the NPA creates the BON. The BON issues nursing licenses and oversees the licensing of nurses within the state. Qualified nurses receive licenses from the board, and the profession’s boundaries and expectations for care are defined (Fitzgerald, 2020). Since each state has its own NPA and BON, the rules governing this subject matter also differ. This paper will analyze the Board of Nursing regulations for Advanced Practice.

Registered Nurses (APRNs) in California and Maryland.
The APRN regulations in California do not have full independence in the workplace. In addition, they are limited to only the areas of expertise they have studied in depth. In California, a doctor must oversee an APRN before the nurse can do a full physical examination, request diagnostic tests, make a diagnosis, or write a prescription. On the other hand, Maryland allows nurse practitioners to perform independent practices. APRNs in this state are authorized by the Board of Nursing to conduct initial patient assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and oversee ongoing treatment plans (Bradley et al., 2019). The difference in the nursing practice regulations in the two states definitely impacts the quality of patient care. In a state like Maryland, where full practice authority in nursing is allowed, there is a decrease in the cost of care because duplication of services is avoided, and patients are allowed to see healthcare providers of their choice. APRNs can adhere to the above regulations by making appropriate examinations, assessments, prescriptions, and treatments as required by their state.

Boards of Nursing (BONs) exist in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Virgin Islands. Similar entities may also exist for different regions. The mission of BONs is the protection of the public through the regulation of nursing practice. BONs put into practice state/region regulations for nurses that, among other things, lay out the requirements for licensure and define the scope of nursing practice in that state/region.

It can be a valuable exercise to compare regulations among various state/regional boards of nursing. Doing so can help share insights that could be useful should there be future changes in a state/region. In addition, nurses may find the need to be licensed in multiple states or regions
