Topic Focus: Inter-professional Collaboration
The concept of inter-professional collaboration in nursing characterizes the coordination of healthcare providers from numerous departments within the healthcare setting to work together in patient healthcare provision (Schot et al., 2020). The current healthcare system is highly complex and the healthcare needs of patients are diverse and evolving. This practicum experience enabled me to discover that the concept of inter-professional collaboration is one of the ideal ways of addressing complex and diverse patients’ healthcare needs. According to Wei et al., (2020), the implementation of inter-professional collaboration in nursing practice is crucial in promoting effective communication, minimization of medication errors, reduction of cost of care, and promotion of safe, timely, and quality healthcare delivery.

Using the concept of inter-professional collaboration in addressing the nursing practice problem entails the incorporation of different healthcare providers drawn from different departments and specialties with different skill sets to ensure collaborative management of the nursing problem under focus. Working as a team in the provision of healthcare to patients leads to enhanced patient outcomes. Positive patient outcomes are attained through the combination of various skills, experiences, knowledge, and resources from diverse team memberships (Zechariah et al., 2019). This practicum experience was instrumental in increasing my awareness of the essence of working together as an inter-professional team in delivering quality healthcare to patients to enhance their chances of attaining better health outcomes. After self-assessment, I realized that my strength in inter-professional collaboration is anchored on my capability and eagerness to team up with other health professionals to accomplish shared objectives. Conversely, my weakness in inter-professional collaboration is the incapacity to coherently articulate the healthcare needs of my patients. Spaulding et al., (2021) contend that provision of training to nurses is essential in enhancing inter-professional collaboration. As such, the extra resources I would suggest is increasing awareness about inter-professional collaboration through training and allocation of needed resources to promote inter-professional collaboration in the organization.
