The decade ahead looks challenging for nurses and they require more education to health reduce health inequities and disparities that impact different populations. In 2010, the IOM report focused on the future of nursing for ten years, from 2010 to 2020 and the current report by the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) explores the role of nurses in lowering not just the inherent health disparities but also promoting equity and leveraging technology to deliver care. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the effects of the NAM report on future development of the nursing profession with the aim of reducing disparities and promoting health equity.

The need to understand the effects and roles of nursing profession on health care in the next decade led to the creation of the National Academy of Medicine’s Committee to review the 2010 IOM report on nursing and make subsequent recommendations. The committee worked with various stakeholders, especially professional nursing organizations like the American Nurses Association among others to develop new report, “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity.” As such, based on the request by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and on behalf of the National Academy of Medicine, the ad hoc committee conducted a study focuses on envisioning and charting a path into the future for the nursing profession to assist reduce the health inequities based on people’s ability to attain full health potential (Wakefield et al., 2022). The committee asserted that through levering their attributes, nurses will help to develop and contribute comprehensively to equitable public health and health care systems designed to meet the needs of all Americans. The committee advanced that while nurses can support the attainment of health equity, they require strong education, supportive work environments, and increased practice autonomy so as to make better care decisions.
Trends in Nursing Workforce & Impact of Nursing Education: Nurses’ Role in Change
Different trends are occurring in nursing workforce based on several issues; from healthcare reforms to increased deployment of technology to meet patient needs. These trends include increased need for patient-centric care provision, deployment of technologies to improve access to quality care, use of evidence-based practice, and an aging nursing population as baby boomers retire. Further, the need for better skills and competencies like cultural competent care due to diverse needs and patient population are affecting the nursing workforce (Kleinpell et al., 2022). These issues imply that nurses should enhance their skills’ set and competencies through training and advanced education.
The other trend in nursing workforce is the increased levels of specialization that many nurses are pursuing to meet the diverse patient and demographic needs. For instance, specialization in geriatrics care and pediatrics as well as family practitioners and informatics nursing all impact the nursing workforce. Again, the shift to compensating care cost through models like value-based purchase all demonstrate the trends shaping the nursing profession.
Nursing education is adapting to meet these evolving needs of the profession through different ways. Firstly, specialty courses are ensuring that nurses get relevant skills to meet patient and health populations’ needs. Nurses continue to specialize to cater to the different patients. For instance, those with chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes (Wakefield et al., 2022). Secondly, increased integration of healthcare technology has led nursing education to develop informatics nursing and other technology associated course content to help nurses have sufficient skills and abilities to integrate these aspects in care delivery (Stanford, 2020). Thirdly, nursing education continues to adapt to these changes by enhancing research work and offering terminal and advanced degree programs like Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in nursing. These educational preparations are essential for nurses to attain better and advanced skills to deliver quality and patient-centered care.
Nurses are change agents and play a critical role in leading transformation in healthcare. As patient advocates, their role include coordination and implementation of new and innovative models to enhance care delivery. Nurses also communicate new practices through evidence-based practice (EBP) interventions to improve patient outcomes. They also ensure that all stakeholders work collaboratively to develop health policies and legislations that focus on effective patient care in diverse healthcare settings.
Role of State-based Action Coalition & Advancing Goals of the NAM Report
State-based action coalitions are essential in enhancing coordination and implementation of recommendations by the NAM report on nursing. These coalitions’ main work is to campaign at local, regional and state levels on the need to enhance nursing profession and offering nurses the necessary resources and tools to attain the goals of the NAM report. These coalitions drive nurse-led change at local levels through working with different partners, especially businesses, to transform health care using nursing and developing healthier communities (Wakefield et al., 2022). The creation of state-based coalitions in each state is based on the need to attain uniformity in implementing new ideas and principles to attain the goals of the report on the future of nursing as the most appropriate way to attain health equity and reduce the underlying disparities.
These coalitions are an integral part of advancing the goals of the NAM report on the future of nursing. The coalitions achieve the goals by coordinating local and regional efforts and resources for campaigning on health reforms. These coalitions are active in urging state governments to remove nursing practice barriers (Stanford, 2020). The coalitions work with professional nursing organizations and government agencies and educational institutions to advance nursing education as a means of removing practice barriers.
Initiative by Minnesota Action-Based Coalition
The Minnesota Action Coalition works with all stakeholders in the state to transform health care through creation and modeling of innovative solutions led by nurses. The two initiatives by the action coalition in the state include expanding BSN education for nursing students and improving health equity for the state’s population (Minnesota Action Coalition, 2023). These initiatives are essential in helping nurses meet the goals of the National Academy of Medicine. The action-based coalition asserts that attainment of health equity needs reflection on the nurses’ identities and responsibilities as change champions.
These initiatives advance he nursing profession as they illustrate that nurses should acquire more education to hone sufficient skills and competencies to deal with the diverse patient populations. Secondly, as part of the contributors to overall health equity, nurses should spearhead the change process by imploring their colleagues and other providers to embrace the transformation. Nurses should acquire advanced education to meet the demands by improving their skills, knowledge and expertise in their specialties.
Barriers to Advancement of Nurses in Minnesota
Improvement of care delivery is essential in meeting patient and health population needs in Minnesota. However, different barriers exist that limit nurses’ overall practice and delivery of care. These include practice barriers due to the restricted practice authority, limited support for advanced nursing education, and resource scarcity that limits optimal allocation and patient care. Institutional barriers impede the ability of nurses to practice based on their abilities and competencies (Kleinpell et al., 2022). As such, it is essential to tackle these practice barriers through the action-based coalitions, and organizational support. Nurses require nurse leaders to support their advancement in education and optimal resource allocation to meet patient care needs.
Conclusion
The nursing profession will play a core part in attaining the goals of the NAM report on nursing and elimination of health disparities. Nurses as change agents should champion better education to acquire sufficient skills and knowledge. They should leverage the activities of state-based action coalitions to enhance their competencies and better care delivery.
