Healthcare professionals like nurses must be able to appropriately identify the critical developmental milestones of babies to know infants who are at increased risk of having delays. The case study presents a nine-month-old girl who is 68.5 cm in length (25th percentile), has a weight of 6.75 kg (5th percentile) and a head circumference of 43 cm (25th percentile). According to the CDC (2023), the average weight for a 9-month-old girl should be 8 to 8.6 kg and the length 68.5 to 71 centimeters and a head circumference of about 44 centimeters. As such, the girl presented in this case is underweight and does not meet the other physical makers like height and length. Developmental markers include physical, communication, social, emotional and cognitive.

The CDC markers for the 9-month-old girl include being able to complete tasks like crawling, sitting with limited or without support, pulling self to standing, and making stepping moves. Communication and language milestones at this age include making a lot of different sounds like “mama,” and lifting arms to be picked. Others include coping sounds and utilizing fingers to point at things. Emotional markers at this age include being fearful of stranger, having favorite toys, clinging to familiar people and faces (Bishop, et al., 2019). Cognitive milestones at this age include looking for falling objects and banging two things together as well as picking up small items between thumb and index finger.

The recommendations for the mother will depend mainly on the answers to the developmental questions. Assessing the nutritional intake should be key to knowing the lack of weight for the child (Minnesota Department of Health, 2019). This implies that the nurse should evaluate the feeding schedule of the infant and if the mother is breastfeeding her or not. If she is breastfeeding the baby, it would be important to recommend foods that are rich in nutrition for the baby. It is also essential to ensure that the mother is giving her enough food and producing sufficient breast milk for her (Green, 2018). At this age, the child can eat small pieces of solid food like cooked vegetables. The mother should also ensure that she is getting sufficient nutrients to get enough milk for the infant.
