The standards of professional nursing practice entail authoritative statements of the actions and behaviors that all registered nurses (RNs), irrespective of their role, population, specialty and setting, should follow to competently perform. These standards define the competence levels nursing practice based on the nursing process which applies critical thinking (Boehning et al., 2022). In New York, the state Board of Nursing develops the nursing standards of practice in collaboration with professional nursing organizations like the American Nurses Association (ANA) local chapter. The process of developing these standards of practice follows the provision of the state’s Nursing Practice Act (NPA) that mandates the board to set out the scope of practice and responsibilities for all RNs and even those in certain specialties like family nurse practitioners.

The process starts by the Board of Nursing establishing a task force in collaboration with the professional organizations like ANA to create and document new standards or reviewing and revising existing ones (New York State Nurses Association, 2023). The created board may include specialist nurses, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and RNs, all having certain roles and functions. The task force uses the nursing scope and standards of practice document as a template in the development process based on the complexity of the nursing practice and the need to attain effective standards across all the nursing specialties (Brunt et al., 2022). The template contains six standards of practice and an additional nine standards of professional performance that are used as benchmarks when making a review to develop new ones. On completion of its work, the committee submits their recommendations to the Board of Nursing which is tasked with developing policies in form of bills that are presented in state legislature for considerations and passage to become laws and regulations on nursing practice in the state of New York.
The standards of practice in my specialty area help the public to be safe from malpractices. Nurses should understand the provisions of the nursing practice act and be aware laws and comply with them in nursing practice. These laws protect the public from possible harm and risks emanating from unsafe nursing practice.
