Nutrition is a central component in health promotion because food is a crucial element of routine and social life. Food is required by the body for growth, development, and sustenance of normal body functioning. The type of diet consumed directly impacts the routine functioning of the body and health. Therefore, nutrition is a crucial aspect of maintaining a balanced lifestyle (Truman et al., 2020). In addition, various conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and blood pressure are associated with nutrition and are among the leading causes of death in the US. Therefore, it is undeniable that nutrition needs the greatest consideration in health promotion efforts and education. It has the potential to minimize or expose individuals to many types of diseases. Nutrition can also be used as a tool to lower complications of morbidity such as cancer or cardiovascular diseases.
Various nutritional challenges exist in emerging populations face. One of the challenges is access to healthy food. There is a wide prevalence of cheap and healthy foods, which are highly processed and lack nutritional needs. Moreover, there are socioeconomic limitations in access to healthy foods. Some of these factors are the high cost of purchasing healthy food, the language barrier during nutrition education, lack of skills in healthy diets, and inadequate cooking skills (Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). Also, the majority of people are busy and fail to take appropriate nutrition and diet, leading to a deficiency of essential dietary requirements in the body. This exposes them to the risk of malnutrition and various diseases.
Nutritional deficiency leads to malnutrition, which makes individuals weak and susceptible to various health conditions. On the other hand, nutritional excess can lead to excess toxicity in the body, thus exposing individuals to the risk of various conditions (Fauzi et al., 2022). Therefore, it is important to keep optimum nutritional level to ensure optimum health.
