The Affordable Care Act Reduced Socioeconomic Disparities
The Affordable Care Act or the Obama Care is arguably the most famous legislation in recent times in the US healthcare settings and circles. This law was formulated with the major aim of increasing access to care at reduced rates hence fighting the health disparity that has plagued the US healthcare system for ages. As such, in the past, various research efforts have been made to explore how effective the Affordable Care Act has been in achieving its initial targets, such as improving care access, reducing healthcare costs, and reducing the socioeconomic disparities in healthcare access (Buchmueller & Levy, 2020). Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to explore a quantitative scholarly nursing article related to the PICOT question and summarize the article’s appraisal.

Description of the Purpose
The article of focus is an article authored by Griffith et al. (2017). This article focuses on the Affordable Care Act in reducing the socioeconomic disparities in healthcare access. The purpose of this article was to assess the changes in healthcare access and socioeconomic disparities in the US under the Affordable Care Act by using survey data for the period 2011-2015.
The Explanation of the Research Design
The researchers assessed changes in the disparities using survey data for the period 2011-2015. They assessed various aspects such as avoidance of medical care due to cost, having a personal doctor, and insurance coverage. The researchers extracted data for the nonelderly adults from 18 to 64 years, covering several states. A four-step analytical approach was then employed or applied in the analysis of the measures (Griffith et al.,2017)
Discussion of Sample
The sample considered for this study were non-elderly adults aged 18-64 years. The sample population also contained both men and women. The researchers used their survey data which focused on various aspects such as avoidance of medical care due to cost, having a personal doctor, and insurance coverage (Griffith et al.,2017).
Description of Data Collection Methods
The major data collection method was the use of survey data. The data used was obtained from secondary sources, where there researchers used survey data for the period 2011 to 2015 from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (Griffith et al.,2017). The approach was used in assessing data trends in avoidance of medical care due to cost, having a personal doctor, and insurance coverage.
Summary of Findings
The researcher stratified the analyses by home ownership status, employment status, educational level, and household income. From the analysis, the researchers noted that those individuals in the lower socioeconomic strata had an improvement in areas that expanded eligibility for Medicaid as well as those that did not expand it. Nonetheless, the improvements were more pronounced in states that allowed the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act (Griffith et al., 2017). Another important finding is that the gap in insurance between those with annual incomes above $75,000 and below $25,000 fell to 17% from 31% in the expansion stages and to 28% in the non-expansion states.
Strengths and Limitations of the Study
The study had various strengths and limitations. One of the strengths is that it used a large volume of data spanning several years and covering several states, hence improving its validity. On the other hand, one of the limitations is that a survey non-response method can lead to bias (Griffith et al.,2017). The next limitation is that there was uncertainty in the persistence of the observed changes due to the changing policy environment
Recommendations
This article shows that the Affordable Care Act has resulted in various benefits, implying that individuals should be encouraged to take insurance coverage to improve care access and reduce disparities. Another recommendation is that there is a need for more research to determine if the improved access would automatically lead to improved outcomes (Griffith et al.,2017). It should also be determined if it will translate into a continued reduction in health disparities even in the phase of the dynamic policy environment.
Conclusions
Affordable Care Act has led to several benefits since it came into force in 2010. In the last decade, additional millions of Americans have improved access to care as compared to the previous decade. Therefore, this policy has led to reduced socioeconomic disparities in healthcare access.
