Networking Opportunities
Currently, I have been working in the healthcare field for 20 years in various roles. It was in 2012 that I began my career as a Registered Nurse. While working as a floor nurse, I wanted to advance my career, so I decided to obtain my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) on-line. At the end of the program, I was still unclear about what I wanted to specialize in order to advance into the Master of Nursing Program. After five years of learning about different areas to specialize in, I have chosen my passion for helping individuals in the field of Mental Health. Networking Opportunities NURS 6003.

Once I realized Mental Health is what I wanted to specialize in, I began discussing University options with my fellow co-workers. As discussed in a Blog Post written by Schmidt, K. (2020), ” Professional networking can help nurses achieve the fundamental knowledge required to take the next step” (Professional networking is imperative to nursing career advancement section). It was concluded that Walden University is well known and utilized frequently within my organization, which also includes a specialization in the area of Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH). To have the opportunity and ability to focus just on this specialization provided me with some confidence that success could be achieved. It was when I reviewed the University mission statement that this was the college for me. The Walden University College of Nursing mission statement is described as ” a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change” (Walden University, 2020, Mission section), which is exactly the guidance I will need to succeed. It was also interesting to review how Walden defined positive social change. Networking Opportunities NURS 6003. To be reassured that I will have a group of professional faculty members and an academic community promoting my individual growth, ideas, and producing actions within a social community provides me the confidence I have been seeking (Walden University, 2020, Social Change section). For me to achieve my goals as a successful Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I reviewed the MSN Learning Outcomes. Walden University not only promotes the delivery of the highest quality care, but it is also committed to the professional development of their students and to provide them with the tools that will be needed. The understanding that I will have the ability to effectively communicate, critique evidence-based literature to support decision making, and continue to build on the improvement of patient center quality care is a reward in itself (Walden University, n.d., MSN Learning Outcomes section).

response.
Nice to meet you Melissa. I am also on the path to being a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and I agree with you on how the MSN Learning Outcomes align with helping your decision making skills using evidence-based literature. Especially knowing that evidenced- based behavior is how we deliver patient-centered and individualized care nowadays. Walden University’s mission to “provide a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can affect positive social change”, will also go a long way in preparing you to acclimate with different members of a interdisciplinary team, but now as scholar-practitioner.

After receiving my nursing degree 2 years ago, I’ve worked on an ICU Stepdown unit. When I accepted this position, I completed a program called StaRN. This program eases the transition from school to “real-life” nursing through simulations and nursing skill reviews. The StaRN educators gave us the tools to feel more confident on our first day to our units. Studies have found that with positive facility-student relationships, improve student’s learning experiences to care, desire to care for others and self-actualization (Salehian, Heydari, Aghebati, & Moonaghi, 2017, p. 257). They inspired me to pursue a Nursing Educator career. Upon researching different jobs, I found that the majority of the positions require a master’s degree. I began researching various universities that offer a Master’s in Nursing Education, and after a coworker’s recommendation, I found Walden University. Networking Opportunities NURS 6003.
Walden University’s mission statement focuses on transforming ourselves into scholars that can improve society. I believe working in the healthcare field, we all have the drive to help and strengthen our communities. With positive social change being a focus for Walden, we can become role models and advocates for our society, which is essential as nurses. Networking Opportunities NURS 6003. Once I began reviewing Walden University’s goal statements, one, in particular, stood out to me: “To provide multi contextual educational opportunities for career learners” (“Vision, Mission, and Goals”, 2019). My career goal strongly influences my education, and having a flexible and unique way to fulfill that goal is crucial.
To effectively complete my goals of becoming a nurse educator, I must understand and achieve Walden University’s learning outcomes. “Evaluate health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialist nursing knowledge to restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury” (“Master of Science in Nursing”, 2019). This learning outcome is crucial to succeeding in education. We, as nurses, must not only continue to educate and promote health in our patients but also ourselves. Networking Opportunities NURS 6003
