Module 4 Discussion
Advertisements communicate different ideas about society and its structures. People’s behaviors, lifestyles, and other aspects can be studied through advertisements. However, social scientists’ interpretation of each aspect depends on perspectives. Broadly, social science perspectives are lenses or approaches that sociologists and other social scientists use to study behavior and other social phenomena.

A key social science development that affects how advertisements are studied was the development of functionalism theory by Herbert Spencer. The theory compares society to organs in a body, where each organ plays a critical function in the stability of the whole (Crash Course, 2017). In society, the constituent elements that contribute significantly to the entire body’s functionality include traditions, norms, and social institutions.
The development of functionalism theory affected how my advertisements are studied by integrating the issue of norms in the message. In this case, since societies have different people, there is a possibility that they have norms that influence their everyday behaviors. For instance, Black women have greater satisfaction with thickness than white women (Hughes, 2021). As a result, they are likely to experience minimal self-esteem issues when among other women of different races. Hence, the Google: Body Type advertisement would be interpreted in terms of how different social groups are encouraged to be comfortable with their body sizes. The underlying message should be that no one should be stigmatized based on bodily looks since the idea of bodily perfection varies across social groups. While doing so, it should be remembered that the influence of norms as a social constituent is significant as far as interactions between social groups are concerned.

Each discussion is meant to be a collaborative space for conversation about the course concepts and for learning from your peers’ diverse perspectives. To ensure an interesting discussion, you are encouraged to think creatively about your initial posts and build upon the points made by your peers. It is also important to review the module resources and read the prompts in their entirety before participating in the discussion.
initial post
For your initial post, address the following:
1. Identify a major development that occurred in one perspective of the social sciences that affected how your advertisements might be studied. This could be an event, technological advancement, discovery, rejection/acceptance of a theory, or paradigm shift. You may choose a development from the provided list of “Major Developments in the Social Sciences” in the module resources. Or you may conduct your own research to identify a different development that interests you.
2. Provide a brief summary of the social science development you selected (no more than three sentences).
3. Explain how your chosen development might have affected how your advertisements are studied.
Remember, this assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates. If you refer to any sources, be sure to include an attribution (or citation) to the resource.
