She successfully managed a team of nurses and ensured daily operations run smoothly. Moreover, she guided all nursing staff members as well as addressed any issues or concerns that developed throughout her tenure. Overall, her experiences gave her great insight regarding administrative and managerial requirements. LN has responsibilities for other employees as well. She ensures that nurses have the required resources to enable them to fulfill their duties. From procurement of these resources to planning their use, LN has an obligation to facilitate seamless nursing care. She ensures that nurses can collaborate well with doctors and other supporting staff to ensure patients receive patient-centered, safe, timely, efficient, and quality care.
Specific Responsibilities Related to Informatics
As the current Chief Nursing Officer, LN has a plethora of responsibilities related to informatics. Her primary mission is to use technology and data to upgrade nursing practice and optimize patient outcomes. To ensure the success of this venture, she works in tandem with the Chief Information Officer so that the integration of electronic health record (EHR) systems into nursing tasks is accomplished without any hiccups. Additionally, she is influential in advancing the informed utilization of informatics resources, such as the recent installation of new clinical decision support systems and data analytics platforms for evidence-based practice and quality improvement goals.
Link with AACN Masters Essentials
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2011) set forth nine essentials for a master’s in nursing that all master’s prepared nurses must acquire. From the interview, LN demonstrated multiple roles and responsibilities that align with these essentials. She demonstrated the importance of organizational and systems leadership through her responsibilities in decision-making, patient safety, and care quality. She also demonstrated essential competencies in quality improvement and safety by overseeing and reporting patient safety and care quality program progress to the organization’s top leadership.
LN integrates patient advocacy and advocates for all nurses to implement safety and quality policies. She intervenes in various practice gaps relating to nursing through policy-making and implementation. She believes that she has influenced the current increased adoption of evidence-based practice in the organization. She has published two journal articles that pertain to nursing care safety and quality. LN also uses health technology to ensure that she meets her daily managerial and leadership responsibilities. She analyzes patient statistics periodically through the hospital’s electronic health records to influence some of her decision-making. Therefore, she integrates evidence into practice. Overall, her roles and responsibilities align with at least five essentials (II-VII) for master’s nursing.
Perspectives on Nursing Informatics in the 21st Century
Opinions on New and Emerging Technology
LN acknowledges that technology is a powerful tool in improving healthcare and patient safety. As an advanced nurse practitioner, she is always looking to find ways to improve care delivery through the utilization of new tech solutions. She provided an example of the recently installed changes in the clinical decision support system that the nursing department has advocated for in the last year through her support. Nurses must stay current with industry advancements if they are to tackle persistent challenges and achieve success. That is why she is committed to helping nurses do just that – by applying tech innovations to optimize care delivery and drive impressive outcomes.
The Use of Electronic Data for Decision-Making
For LN, electronic data is an essential component when it comes to nursing management and leadership. She insists that data-driven decision-making plays a key role in upholding evidence-based practice and promoting quality improvement among healthcare professionals. With this in mind, nurses have an exceptional chance to use these facts and figures to uncover patterns, examine outcomes, and make advancements when it comes to patient care. The outcomes of nursing care and healthcare are reflected in the quality of the care. This quality needs to be measurable and thus, patient data and outcomes offer some good strategies to measure the impact of various interventions and programs. Using the electronic data to make decisions would thus ensure that the decisions to improve these interventions would be smart, and thus specific, measurable, realistic, and time-bound.
Role of Nurses in Healthcare Informatics
LN sees nurses as valuable advocates for healthcare informatics. Nurses possess on-the-ground experience and a deep understanding of patient care, so they can play an integral part in forming successful informatics initiatives. Nurses participate in the generation and recording of various measurable and useful patient data (Moore et al., 2020). This data needs to be accurate and reliable. Therefore, nurses greatly impact the managerial and leadership decisions that rely on patient data. To maximize their impact, my interviewee urged nurses to make use of technology, enhance their informatics skillset, and be active participants in projects that aim to revolutionize nursing practice. Ensuring completeness and accuracy of the patient data from history, physical examination findings, clinical investigations, and patient outcomes through proper documentation primarily remain in the hand of nurses.
Pearls of Wisdom Regarding Nurses Entering the Field of Informatics
LN provides important advice to nurses looking to enter the field of informatics. She advocates for advanced education, such as a Master’s Degree in Nursing Informatics, to gain proficiency in the knowledge and skillset required of informatics professionals. Furthermore, she stresses the importance of continuous learning and professional development to remain updated on evolving trends and best practices. According to McBride & Tietze (2022), learning nursing informatics in the current world of computers, data, and patient care, enables nurses to think expansively, creatively, and unconventionally to explore ways of leveraging this technology. Mentorship opportunities from knowledgeable informatics professionals and actively engaging with professional organizations and conferences focused on nursing informatics are encouraged. Networking is essential within the field of informatics. LN emphasizes relationship building with peers and colleagues to expand one’s knowledge base and career potential.
Reflection/Conclusion
In my interview with LN, I was provided with thought-provoking insight into the duties undertaken by a Chief Nursing Officer concerning healthcare informatics. LN draws on her clinical practice foundation to direct informatics activity at the medical center from her considerable prior experience as the unit manager of an emergency department, LN’s insights into nursing informatics come at a time when the field is undergoing rapid change and expansion. This interview with LN gave me a better understanding of healthcare informatics professionals’ roles and responsibilities and how informatics can transform nursing practice. LN’s insights broadened my perspectives on nursing informatics, emphasizing its importance for improving patient care and shaping the future of healthcare delivery. In particular, 21st-century nurses are being called upon to increasingly utilize electronic data and tools in their work (Liang & Molloy, 2023). To meet these demands, nurses need to be comfortable with new and emerging technologies and be able to use them
I believe it is crucial to have a Master’s Degree in Nursing Informatics to equip nurses with the invaluable knowledge and aptitude to stay ahead of advances in healthcare informatics, employ technology in their practice, and direct informatics initiatives. During the program, nurses acquire a sound basis in informatics principles, research methodologies, data administration, and system analysis to become proficient and prosperous nursing informatics professionals and nurse leaders. It will enable nurses to meet their daily obligations, including collaborating with other healthcare workers to achieve quality patient care efficiently. I can conclusively say that this interview opened prepared me for future nursing leadership and management by emphasizing the need to advance my education and professional career competitively through informatics. Even as a clinical nurse, I will still need the basic knowledge of healthcare technology and its application to daily nursing.
