Global Healthcare Issue

Mental Health

Description Mental health issue refers to a range of conditions that affect an individual’s emotional and psychological well-being, including anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, among others. This issue can impact individuals adversely by affecting their functional abilities, relationships, work, and general quality of care.

Country United States

United Kingdom
Describe the policy in each country related to the identified healthcare issue. The United States has implemented Mental Health Parity besides the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

The United Kingdom has implemented the Mental Health Act of 1983 and the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health.
What are the strengths of this policy?

The ACA ensures that there is equal coverage of care provided for mental and physical health conditions (Han et al., 2020).

The Mental Health Act of 1983 provides legal protection for people with mental health conditions and ensures that they receive proper treatment (Solanki et al., 2023).

What are the weaknesses of this policy?

The ACA does not cover all mental health services, and many people still face high out-of-pocket costs (Baumgartner et al., 2020). Mental health parity provides funding for community mental health centers, but funding is limited.

There are still significant funding gaps in mental health services, and access to mental health care can be limited in certain regions. The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health aims to address these issues by increasing funding and improving access to care.

Explain how the social determinants of health may impact the specified global health issue. (Be specific and provide examples)

Access to mental health care is often limited by factors such as income, education level, and geographic location. People living in poverty or in rural areas may have less access to mental health care services. The social stigma surrounding mental health conditions can also prevent people from seeking treatment. Similar to the United States, socioeconomic factors and social stigma often limit access to mental health care (Motrico et al., 2021). However, the UK also faces issues with long waiting times for mental health care services, particularly for children and young people.
How has each country’s government addressed the cost, quality, and access to the selected global health issue? The ACA was implemented, which led to the expansion of access to services related to mental health that required insurance to cover mental health services (Han et al., 2020). The ACA also provides funding for mental health services, including the expansion of the Medicaid program to cover more individuals with mental health conditions.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) provides free mental health care to all residents, but funding shortages can lead to long wait times for treatment. Quality of care can also vary depending on the provider and location. Access to specialized care can also be limited in certain regions.
How has the identified health policy impacted the health of the global population? (Be specific and provide examples) The ACA’s focus on healthcare access and affordability has implications for global health in the sense that a healthier US population could be better positioned to support global health initiatives (Han et al., 2020). By expanding access to healthcare and improving health outcomes, the ACA could help reduce the burden of disease in the US, which could, in turn, free up resources for other health-related initiatives both domestically and globally.

The Mental Health Act 1983 has contributed to the global dialogue on mental health and human rights. The principles of patient autonomy and informed consent that are central to the UK Mental Health Act have been adopted by international human rights organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (Griffith, 2023). The WHO’s Mental Health Action Plan, for example, emphasizes the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of people with mental health conditions and includes recommendations for promoting community-based care and reducing the use of involuntary treatment.
Describe the potential impact of the identified health policy on the role of nurses in each country. Mental health nurses play an important role in the United States by providing care and support to individuals with mental health conditions (Han et al., 2020). They also play a role in educating the public about mental health and reducing stigma. However, limited funding and resources can lead to high nurse-to-patient ratios and burnout.

Mental health nurses play a similar role in the United Kingdom, providing care and support to individuals with mental health conditions and educating the public. However, the NHS also faces staffing shortages and high nurse-to-patient ratios, which can impact the quality of care.
Explain how global health issues impact local healthcare organizations and policies in both countries. (Be specific and provide examples)

Limited funding and resources for mental health care can lead to inadequate services and policies. The ACA has enhanced increased access to mental health care, but more needs to be done to address the shortage of mental health nurses.

The prevalence of mental health conditions in the United States has increased the demand for mental health services, leading to a strain on healthcare resources and an increased need for funding for mental health services (Rivera-Segarra et al., 2022).

The stigma associated with mental health conditions in the United Kingdom has resulted in limited access to mental health services and a lack of resources to address mental health issues (Motrico et al., 2021).

The National Health Service in the United Kingdom has been working to integrate mental health services into primary care services and improve access to health care in individuals with mental health problems.

General Notes/Comments Mental health issue affects many countries globally. The laid down policies in different countries impact the management of the issue. These policies also impact the general provision of care by nurses to the target patients.

PART 2

As a nurse leader, it is crucial to have a global perspective to address global health concerns and enhance the health of the communities we serve. Based on my analysis in Part 1 of this assignment, I believe that incorporating a global perspective into my local practice can help improve the quality, access, and cost of healthcare delivery while promoting equity and addressing social determinants of health. In the creation of a plan for social change, I would advocate for the incorporation of the global perspective in various ways. I will work with my colleagues and leadership to promote awareness of global health issues and their impact on local communities. I will also encourage the use of evidence-based global health policies and practices in our local healthcare organization. I will then advocate for the inclusion of cultural competence and diversity training in our staff development programs to improve the quality of care provided to patients from different backgrounds. Lastly, I will collaborate with local and global organizations to support strategies that focus on the promotion of health equity and social determinants of health.

As a nurse leader, the inclusion of this approach may affect my local practice. Incorporating a global perspective will assist me and my team recognize and address the health needs of patients from varied backgrounds. It will also assist us in establishing a complete approach to patient treatment that takes into account social determinants of health, such as poverty, housing, and education, which affect patient health outcomes (Tataw, 2022). By embracing a global perspective, we may improve healthcare quality, access, and cost-effectiveness while promoting fairness and tackling social determinants of health. In addition, this approach would help social change in numerous ways. When the global perspective is incorporated into local practice as a nurse leader indicates a commitment to tackling health inequities and promoting health equity. This method would help to cut healthcare expenditures and enhance access to care for underprivileged groups. Lastly, by embracing a global perspective, we may support projects that promote social change and advance the health and well-being of communities worldwide.

If you talk about a possible poor health outcome, do you believe that outcome will occur? Do you believe eye contact and personal contact should be avoided?

You would have a difficult time practicing as a nurse if you believed these to be true. But they are very real beliefs in some cultures.

Differences in cultural beliefs, subcultures, religion, ethnic customs, dietary customs, language, and a host of other factors contribute to the complex environment that surrounds global healthcare issues. Failure to understand and account for these differences can create a gulf between practitioners and the public they serve.

In this Assignment, you will examine a global health issue and consider the approach to this issue by the United States and by one other country.

To Prepare:

Review the World Health Organization’s (WHO) global health agenda and select one global health issue to focus on for this Assignment.

Select at least one additional country to compare to the U.S. for this Assignment.

Reflect on how the global health issue you selected is approached in the U.S. and in the additional country you selected.

Review and download the Global Health Comparison Matrix provided in the Resources.

The Assignment: (1- to 2-page Global Health Comparison Matrix; 1-page Plan for Social Change)
