Evidence-based practice proposal Capstone Project Topic Selection and Approval Essay

Capstone Project
Access to healthcare for veterans is important in improving their overall health and wellbeing. Healthcare providers and policymakers implement initiatives that advance the safety and quality of care for veterans in the country. However, access to healthcare remains a challenge to most due to issues such as the limited availability of trained healthcare providers to meet their needs and ineffective care coordination. Therefore, the project proposes the adoption of telehealth to improve healthcare access and quality for veterans that seek their care services in community living centers.

The Problem or Issue or Intervention
The selected issue of focus in the project is barriers to accessing healthcare by veterans that seek healthcare services in community living centers. According to Marshall et al., (2021), veterans face unique barriers in accessing Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care such as delays in accessing community care, stranger harassment in medical facilities, inadequate on-site gender-specific services, and limited healthcare provider to offer veterans-specific care. Therefore, it is crucial that an innovative intervention be adopted to address these barriers and enhance healthcare access for veterans for their health and wellbeing.
The Setting or Context
The American government implemented the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) care to increase healthcare access for the veterans. VHA enables access to general and specialized care for all the veterans irrespective of their backgrounds. Efforts such as the provision of gender-sensitive comprehensive primary care and improved contracted care with the community providers have been adopted to increase the relevance and utilization of VHA care. However, veterans continue to experience significant challenges in accessing the care they need even in the community living settings, which affect their health and care outcomes (Ashcroft et al., 2023; Jiang et al., 2021).
Description of the Problem and Intervention
As noted above, the selected problem for focus in the project is barriers in healthcare access for veterans in community living settings. According to Jiang et al., (2021), veterans experience barriers to efficient healthcare delivery that include long wait times and geographical limitations. Marshall et al., (2021) add that veterans also experience limited on-site gender-specific services, delayed access to community care, stranger harassment at the VHA medical facilities, and limited availability of gender-specific trained healthcare providers. There is also a challenge in the provision of skilled rehabilitative care to address the needs of the veterans in VHA facilities. Veterans also suffer from ineffective transitioning to communities from VHA facilities, which affect outcomes (Feyman et al., 2021; Simons et al., 2021).
Effect of the Problem and Intervention
Barriers to healthcare access among the veterans has adverse outcomes on their health. It delays the utilization of healthcare services for their medical and mental health problems. The barriers also increase the risk of complications due to delayed access to healthcare. Veterans are also increasingly at a risk of poor quality of life because of the high disease burden. Delayed healthcare access can also increase healthcare costs due to prolonged hospitalizations and treatment of comorbidities (Nicosia et al., 2021; Simons et al., 2021).
Significance of the Topic and Its Nursing Practice Implications
The issue of barriers to accessing healthcare is significant because of its impact on the health and health outcomes of the veterans. The issue contributes to disproportionate access to healthcare for the population. Its implications to nursing practice include the need for policy advocacy to address the problem and exploring evidence-based strategies (Bovin et al., 2019).
Proposed Solution
The proposed solution entails the adoption of telehealth to enhance access to healthcare for veterans seeking care in community living centers. Telehealth is a technology that will enable virtual delivery of care services to the veterans. It will eliminate barriers such as geographical location, healthcare provider availability and costs. Its adoption will improve outcomes of care for this population (Slightam et al., 2020; Zulman et al., 2019).
Conclusion
In summary, the selected problem is barriers to healthcare access for veterans. The problem affects their health and health outcomes. The proposed solution is the adoption of telehealth in community living centers. The technology will eliminate barriers to healthcare for this population.
