Abstract
Pressure ulcers are a significant health issue among elderly patients in long-term care facilities. This proposed research aims to investigate the incidence and prevalence of pressure ulcers among patients aged 65 years and above with comorbidities residing in a long-term care facility, identify risk factors, and evaluate the effectiveness of prevention and treatment programs. A mixed-methods approach will be used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The study will involve analyzing electronic health records to identify patients with pressure ulcers and assess the effectiveness of prevention programs. Interviews and focus groups will be conducted with healthcare professionals and patients to gain insights into their experiences with pressure ulcers. The biopsychosocial model of health will guide this study’s conceptual framework. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on pressure ulcers and provide insights into preventing pressure ulcers and improving the quality of life of elderly patients in long-term care facilities.

Rationale

Preventing pressure ulcers requires a coordinated effort between staff members, patients, and families. However, this can be challenging in long-term care facilities where staff turnover rates are high, and patients often have complex medical needs. Furthermore, the use of evidence-based practices is crucial in the prevention of pressure ulcers (Nussbaum et al., 2018). However, many long-term care facilities do not have formal pressure ulcer prevention programs in place, and staff may not be adequately trained in best practices.
This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of direct education to staff on the implementation of a formal pressure ulcer prevention program in reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers, identifying patients at risk for pressure ulcers, and improving skin care among older adults with comorbidities in long-term care facilities. By providing direct education to staff on the implementation of a formal pressure ulcer prevention program, this study can help to improve the quality of care provided to older adults with comorbidities in long-term care facilities (Padula & Delarmente, 2019). Moreover, the findings of this study can be used to inform the development of future pressure ulcer prevention programs and policies. Ultimately, this study has the potential to improve the quality of life for older adults with comorbidities in long-term care facilities by reducing the incidence of pressure ulcers and promoting better skin care practices.
