The life cycle of health information applications entails four phases that include analysis, design, implementation and maintenance. The analysis phase entails feasibility study and requirements collection. The second phase involves the design, coding, and testing of the health information application like electronic health records (EHRs) (Andargoli et al., 2019). The design framework facilitates the implementation stage. For instance, the conversion test analysis is conducted during the implementation.
The health informatics professional plays critical roles in the management of health information throughout its life cycle. These roles include developing information systems and process to improve quality and efficiency of care, building, optimizing and maintaining applications like the EHR. The professional also focuses on providing data management, analytical and leadership skills and competencies to attain the set goals (Chenthara et al., 2019). The professional is also the guardian of patient health information and represent their interests concerning issues like data privacy, security and confidentiality. They also educate the staff about handling personal health records and maintaining the requisite security measures like protected health information rule (Hauschild et al., 2022). More fundamentally, they must establish appropriate hardware, software, and storage channels for the information at each level of the information life cycle.
Conversely, these professionals also encounter challenges in their roles and responsibilities during the life cycle of health information applications. Core challenges include protection of the integrity of the collected health data, security from possible intrusion, and the development of effective organizational protocols concerning the use of the data by those under his supervision (Sodhro et al., 2018). Bottlenecks in data design may lead to poorly developed and designed user interfaces and the need for sufficient skills’ levels among the different users, especially the healthcare professionals in the organization.
