Assessments are an important part of nursing education. Nurse educators utilize assessment to identify the effectiveness of the teaching methods used in addressing the needs of the students. Assessments methods such as formative and summative assessments provide an accurate picture of the effectiveness of the methods utilized for curriculum delivery. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine a formative and summative strategy selected for the lesson plan, instructor satisfaction survey, and a concept map that illustrates the relationship among the assessments.

Formative Assessment Strategy

 Formative assessments are ongoing processes that nurse educators use for teaching and learning. The assessments help in improving the understanding of the students and guide self-directed learning. Nurse instructors use formative assessments to monitor the learning process and develop improvement strategies. The selected formative assessment strategy that would be used for the lesson is pre-class open-ended questions. This strategy will entail asking the students the things they learned in the previous lessons. Its use will aim at determining their ability to retain the things taught and assess their level of understanding. Pre-class open-ended questions require students to recall as well as reflect about the things learned in the previous lessons and respond to the questions. This strategy was selected because it provides accurate insights into the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to be explored to achieve optimum outcomes in the learning process. The results will guide plan revisions. I will explore additional learning and teaching strategies needed in the plan if the students demonstrate challenges in understanding some concepts (Barana et al., 2019; Ismail et al., 2022). I will also use it to focus more on the strategies that align with the student needs.

Summative Assessment Strategy

            Summative assessment is an assessment approach that is undertaken at the end of a unit or a course. It contributes to a considerable proportion of the student’s grade in a course. Unlike formative assessment, summative assessment does not provide students immediate feedback to improve their learning process. The selected summative assessment technique for the lesson plan is an end of unit examination. The test will cover all the areas taught in the course. The test will assess the student ability to understand and apply the different concepts to their future practice. This assessment strategy was selected because of its high reliability and accuracy in providing insights into student learning and understanding. The results will guide future lesson plan revisions (Ismail et al., 2022). It will enable the identification of additional strategies to be incorporated into teaching and learning.

Instructor Satisfaction Survey

 Instructor satisfaction survey is a tool that obtains feedback from the students about their satisfaction with their educators. My nurse instructor satisfaction survey focuses on obtaining information about the subjective experiences of the students with my teaching. The tool will enable me to identify my strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities to explore to achieve my desired competencies (Glazier & Harris, 2021). It will also help me to identify the factors that influence student satisfaction and engagement in the teaching and learning processes.

In summary, summative and formative assessments will be used in the developed lesson plan. Formative assessment will provide immediate feedback for improved student performance. Summative assessment will entail the use of an end of course examination to gauge student learning and understanding.
