Psychotherapy for Clients with Addictive Disorders

Addictive disorders lead to various negative impacts hence a need to treat and manage them appropriately. Addictive disorders are usually known to mainly result from substance abuse, and therefore, as part of the psychotherapy approaches, addiction treatment should also focus on reducing substance abuse by teaching the clients various skills, such as staying sober and recovery skills (Rehm& Shield, 2019). Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to explore psychotherapy for clients with addictive disorders with a major focus on opioids. As part of this assignment, a research article focusing on a therapeutic approach for treating clients with an addictive disorder, provide an overview of the article, explore the findings, and discuss if the limitations of the study might impact the ability to use the findings.

Overview of the Selected Article

The article considered for this write-up is an article authored by Rezaie et al. (2021). This article focused on exploring the impacts of dialectical behavior therapy on depression, craving, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation in patients with opioid dependence and addiction disorder.  The population under consideration in this research is a group of fifty men who were already using methadone for opioid use disorder. In addition, all the participants chosen for the study were adults. The authors explored the use of dialectical behavioral therapy. This is not a new intervention, as it has been used before. The authors claimed that the use of this approach led to a substantial improvement among patients with opioid dependence, especially in terms of emotion regulation and reduction in depression and craving for the drug.

The Findings/Outcomes of the Study in the Article

The researchers collected data using questionnaires, and the data were analyzed using various statistical approaches such as T-test and Chi-square. The analysis of the data showed that the use of dialectical behavioral therapy led to a substantial improvement in patient distress tolerance and improved emotion regulation (Rezaie et al., 2021). In addition, the researchers also observed a significant reduction in depression and raving. As such, this research showed the importance of dialectical behavioral therapy on opioid dependence which is an addictive disorder. This approach was particularly found to be effective on useful in emotion regulation among patients with opioid use dependence. The findings of this article can translate into practice with my clients. For example, dialectical behavioral therapy can be used together with other pharmacological approaches, such as the use of methadone (Cooperman et al., 2019). The integration of this treatment approach is expected to improve outcomes for my clients, especially a critical role in mood regulation.

The Limitations of the Study and Ability to Use the Findings

This study had various limitations which can negatively impact its use in practice. One of the limitations was that the researchers used a small sample size. Such a small sample size could lead to biased results. Limitations also included the problems experienced during the implementation of the intervention, such as complications with continuing the sessions, difficulty understanding the content, and lack of cooperation among the participants (Rezaie et al., 2021). In addition, this study focused on the male population using methadone, therefore, limiting its generalizability. Such limitations may impact my ability to use the findings. For example, the findings may need to be used with caution when attending to patients using different medications apart from methadone and female patients. The sources used in this write-up are scholarly since they are peer-reviewed and evidence-based.

Conclusion

Patients with addictive disorders require appropriate treatment. The article explored the impact of dialectical behavior therapy, which the researcher found to be effective. This approach can be used since the results were significant. However, the results obtained should be used with caution, for example, when attending to female patients or those who are using medications rather than methadone.
