Assignment: NUR 6053 Discussion-Workplace Environment Assessment
Our organization scored 74 points in the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory. This means the organization’s work environment is mildly healthy (Clark, 2015). A mildly healthy environment can be linked to low employee satisfaction, work engagement, and morale. Employees in the organization, especially in the nursing cadre, constantly complain of a high workload with unreasonable nurse-to-patient ratios. This leads to fatigue and burnout among nurses, which greatly lowers their job satisfaction and morale. Burnout is linked with psychological effects on nurses, like high stress levels, anger, and irritability that contribute to communication issues, conflict, and, at times, lack of respect (Koutsimani et al., 2019). This contributes to some degree of incivility in the workplace.

Furthermore, burnout leads to a high nursing turnover, and the organization has low retention levels that worsen the existing workload for nurses. Employees in the organization also report that they are left out of making decisions that involve them, which further lowers their morale (Karaferis et al., 2022). They perceive that the organization’s management does not consider their opinions, which would be key to creating a healthier work environment for the employees.
I faced incivility as a new grad RN nurse working in the medical-surgical unit. One of the nurses constantly criticized my work and gossiped about me with other nurses. On one of the shifts, one of my patients informed her that the IV drip was not flowing and the IV cannula needed to be changed. The nurse then shouted at me in front of other nurses about my incompetence since I could not assess if the IV line was patent before starting the IV drip. I then reported to the charge nurse about this incident. The charge nurse held a meeting with the nurses and discussed the acceptable conduct for the unit. She also reminded the team of the rules of behavior in this work environment and encouraged each of us to respect each other, noting how the nurse should have approached me to address the issue.

How healthy is your workplace?
You may think your current organization operates seamlessly, or you may feel it has many issues. You may experience or even observe things that give you pause. Yet, much as you wouldn’t try to determine the health of a patient through mere observation, you should not attempt to gauge the health of your work environment based on observation and opinion. Often, there are issues you perceive as problems that others do not; similarly, issues may run much deeper than leadership recognizes.
There are many factors and measures that may impact organizational health. Among these is civility. While an organization can institute policies designed to promote such things as civility, how can it be sure these are managed effectively? In this Discussion, you will examine the use of tools in measuring workplace civility.
To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and examine the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, found on page 20 of Clark (2015).
- Review and complete the Work Environment Assessment Template in the Resources.
Post a brief description of the results of your Work Environment Assessment. Based on the results, how civil is your workplace? Explain why your workplace is or is not civil. Then, describe a situation where you have experienced incivility in the workplace. How was this addressed? Be specific and provide examples.
