SAFER Guides
Healthcare practitioners should continually explore the available opportunities for improving health outcomes. Healthcare technologies present a massive opportunity for better outcomes, albeit safety and privacy risks with varying magnitudes across organizations. SAFER guides demonstrate how healthcare organizations can optimize technology safety through the safe use of electronic health records (HealthIT.gov, 2018). At all levels, clinicians should understand safety essentials and support their organizations in addressing the greatest concerns.

Among the SAFER Guides, I completed the organizational responsibilities and clinician communication guides. In agreement with Gluschkoff et al. (2021), organizational safety hugely depends on the safety of health information technology (IT). A self-assessment of organizational responsibilities demonstrated that my organization’s implementation status is encouraging as far as the three domains of responsibilities are concerned. For instance, under Domain 1 (Safe Health IT), the organization trains all electronic health record (EHR) users on best practices. User training improves competence and enables clinicians to use health IT safely (Zaman et al., 2021). Other encouraging practices include involving practicing clinicians in EHR safety-related decisions (Domain 2.4) and staff members regularly monitoring EHR-related software and hardware. Under clinician communication, the implementation status is also encouraging. Under Domain 1 (Safe Health IT), the EHR supports data exchange with other systems. Safe and efficient data exchange typifies high interoperability, which supports clinician communication and interprofessional collaboration (Lehne et al., 2019). The EHR also shows the urgency of the information, which aids clinicians in decision-making.
The greatest lesson from the SAFER guides is that organizations must have robust systems and procedures for promoting the safe use of EHRs. The procedures are multifaceted since they include continuous monitoring of systems, involving clinicians in EHRs’ evaluation, and training users. As a committee member responsible for managing the completion of a SAFER guide, the DNP-prepared nurse must understand the essentials of safe IT implementation. Besides, the DNP must guide the committee and the organization on user training, safety monitoring, and other procedures for safe health IT integration into patient care.

Complete two of the SAFER Guides and summarize the findings (do not include the PDF document with findings but document in a narrative format). One of the SAFER Guides must be either High Priority Practices or Organizational Responsibilities. The other SAFER Guide can be from the other remaining categories: Infrastructure and Clinical Process.
Discuss what you learned and include the role of the DNP as a member of a committee responsible for managing completion of the chosen guide. Feel free to use the resources located in the course content section to support the information shared in your post.
Post your initial response by Wednesday at 11:59 PM EST. Respond to two students by Saturday at 11:59pm EST. The initial discussion post and discussion responses occur on three different calendar days of each electronic week. All responses should be a minimum of 300 words, scholarly written, APA formatted (with some exceptions due to limitations in the D2L editor), and referenced. A minimum of 2 references are required (other than the course textbook). These are not the complete guidelines for participating in discussions. Please refer to the Grading Rubric for Online Discussion found in the Course Resource module.
