Assignment: NRNP 6565: Synthesis in Advanced Nursing Practice Care of Patients in Primary Care Settings Sample
Passing the national certification exams is a major focus of nurses such as the PMHNP. It is on record that some students fail these certification exams every year, thus indicating the need to adequately prepare for this examination. Therefore, individuals need to explore and develop appropriate and relevant action and study plans that form the basis of the preparation to help increase their chances of passing the certification exams (Fitzgerald, 2020). As part of the plan, various aspects are included, for example, the objectives, activities, and the progress accomplished in meeting the set objectives. The implication is that a tailored plan is informed by the learner’s characteristics, such as strengths and weaknesses. As such, the purpose of this assignment is to make a tailored study plan that can be used in preparation for the national certification examination.

A Summary of Strengths and Opportunities for Improvement
The urge to formulate an appropriate study plan led to the taking of the practice test questions. It is important to note that I scored 85/150, which is an indication that, even though there could be areas that I understand appropriately, there is still a big room for improvement, hence opportunities to improve. As such, based on the national certification exams, there are various strengths and opportunities to improve. Among the areas of strength is physical assessment across lifespan and pharmacology, particularly among older populations. Another area of strength is interviewing, obtaining the patient physical history and altered mental status. On the other hand, the assessment also revealed various areas that present an opportunity to grow. For example, I need to improve in treating the younger and pediatric populations. Such a weakness could be due to inadequate time and experience with the pediatric and younger population. The other potential opportunities for improvement include neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, epigenetics, and genomics. I also need to improve my knowledge of how to choose and correctly use various screening tools.
The Formulated Study Plan
It is important to formulate an appropriate study plan. The study plan is based on the assessment of the opportunities to improve and areas of strength. A more appropriate and good study plan should have SMART objectives. Such SMART objectives can help plan the activities that can be used to prepare for the national certification examination.
SMART goal 1: To accurately choose and use the correct assessment instrument and assess at least eight pediatric or youth patients in the first three weeks of the course
Tasks: Achieving this goal will require undertaking various tasks, such as ensuring that I evaluate at least one new patient every day and choose the most appropriate assessment tool to use.
SMART goal 2: To explore the course materials, books, and the PMHNP certification manual during the later stages of the course so that I develop an improved understanding of the requirements for the national certification exams.
Tasks: Read at least one chapter every week and make inquiries on the necessary requirements.
SMART goal 3: To explore the course materials and external materials on genomics, neurophysiology, and neuroanatomy to better understand the nervous system.
Tasks: Consult with the course lecturers and peers on the relevant materials that can be used, including simulation videos.
It is important to measure progress as it ensures that things are done in the right way, and everything is on the right path. One of the strategies for measuring progress is answering self-assessment questions which cover the areas that have been covered. The proposed answers will then be compared with the right answers (Coppa& Winchester, 2020). Another strategy will be an analysis of the scores to further note other areas of weakness which still need attention.
The Proposed Time Table
A timetable is an important document that acts as a guideline on when to accomplish specific tasks. Therefore, it is important to formulate such a timetable. The formulated timetable is shown below.
Time | Activity |
First Quarter | Formulation of the study plan and collection of relevant materials for reading. |
Second Quarter | Acquisition of materials such as simulation videos in genomics, neurophysiology, and neuroanatomy. |
Third quarter | Answering test questions on the covered areas and analyzing the results for improvements. |
Fourth Quarter | Studying the course materials, PMHNP certification manual, and course book is the final phase of preparing for the certification exams. |
The Resources to Be Used in accomplishing the Tasks and Goals
The accomplishment of tasks and goals requires deliberate efforts; as such, resources will form part of what will be used. One of the strategies is taking part in study groups where peers study while preparing for the certification examination. As part of the plan, mnemonics will also be used to help in improving and enhancing memory and learning skills. Online materials such as Fitzgerald’s exams review will also be done as it provides online courses for preparing for the examination. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Review Manual will also form part of the resources to be used (Glasgow et al., 2019)
Conclusion
A student has to make deliberate efforts when preparing for the national certification exams to increase their chances of passing. As such, a relevant plan should be formulated based on potential areas of improvement and areas of strength. This write-up has explored an appropriate study plan with various SMART goals to help in passing the certification exams.
