Rehabilitation of brain injury or stroke

Introduction

The cases of rehabilitation of patients who are a suffering from stroke and who have ended up having problems with their gait are or critical importance to help in ensuring that the standard of health of the people of high. Taking this into account, there are various strategies to help in the rehabilitation of brain injury or stroke. This paper discusses the background and the significance and problems of the stroke of brain injury, the purpose of the study, the research question has been stated, the hypothesis, and the identification and operationalization of variables. Assignment: Literature Review of Rehabilitation of Brain injury or Stroke

Background and Significance of the Problem

Sohlberg and Mateer (2017) indicate that one of the strategies that could be applied in the management of patients who have a brain injury or stroke and that have has paralysis or disorders in their balance is the use of mirror therapy. In addition, there is a proposal by Birbaumer, Piccione, and Chaudhary (2015) that the use of brain-computer interface could help in the management of the issue of gait for the patients who have has post stroke or brain injury. Furthermore, the use of other methods has been proposed. The mirror therapy is one in which a mirror is used to help in creating a reflective illusion of the limb that is affected to make the brain think that the movement has been carried out without pain (Pichiorri et al., 2015). As such, the affected limb is placed behind the mirror and the reflection of the opposing limb is seen in the place of the limb that is hidden.

Statement of the Problem and Purpose of the Study

The problem at hand is to assess the best method that could be useful for affected limbs for African Americans who have suffered from a stroke or brain injury. As such, the two specific disorders that are being assessed in this study are the use of mirror therapy and the use of a brain-computer interface to the management of gait of the patients who have a problem in their lower limbs as a result of stroke or brain injury (Ma, Chan, & Carruthers, 2014). As such, the study will help to analyze the importance of making use of mirror therapy instead of making use of the brain-computer interface.

Research Question

In African American post-stroke or brain injury patients with partial paralysis or gait disorders (P), how does Mirror Therapy (I) compared to brain-computer interfaces (BCI) (C) affect lower limbs of patients (O) over a period of one year (T)?

Population: African American post-stroke or brain injury patients with partial paralysis or gait disorders

Intervention: The use of Mirror Therapy

Comparison:  The use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

Outcome: Positive effects on the use of affected lower limbs of patients

Time: over a period of one year

Hypothesis: Research and Null

The hypothesis for this study is in line with the analysis of the use of the use is mirror therapy as compared to the use of a brain-computer interface. The null hypothesis is this is: if there is the use of mirror therapy or brain-computer interface in the management of the gait of patients who have suffered from brain injury of from the issue of stroke will not be different.

The alternative hypothesis is: If the healthcare providers make use of the mirror therapy will be better than the use of brain-computer interface in the management of the standard of care for the gait of patients who have suffered from a stroke or brain injury.

Identifying and Defining Study Variables

The study variables in this study include the movement of the patients as a result of making use of mirror therapy, the perception of the nurses, the perception of the patients, and the standard of health of the patients. Typically, the movement of the patients will be measured depending on the distance moved in meters. On the other hand, data on the perception of the nurses and the patients will be collected on the issue of gait and the pain that is felt. The nurse will present information on the applicability of the intervention and the ease of use of the system in making sure that the health standard of the patients is assured. The quality of health of the patients will be seen from the extent of pain that the patients have and the various issues of the gait of the patient. In addition, the length of stay of the patients in the healthcare facility will be used to measure the efficiency of the intervention in enhancing the standard of health.

 Operationalize Variables

The measurement of each of the variable will be independently done such that the distance moved by the patients will be measured in using the rulers for the number of meters moved. On the other hand, the perception of the patients and the nurses will be determined from the interviews carried out in relation to the intervention that is used. Typically, the variable of the standard of health of patients will be determined by the number of days that the patient is in the healthcare facility and the records on the health condition.
