Annual Examination of an Adolescent Patient Discussion Essay

Adolescents undergo immense emotional, physical, mental and psychosocial changes during this period of growth and development (Alderman et al., 2019). As such, they require regular check-ups to assess their state of wellness. During the exam, various segments are assessed, such as medical history. Physical examination is also important, height and weight measurements are taken and body mass index (BMI) determined. Pubertal development and laboratory tests are also conducted. For behavioral and psychosocial assessment, the HEEADSSS (home, education, employment, activities, drugs, sexual activity, suicide and depression, safety from violence/injury) tool can be used. These exams ensure that they maintain a healthy lifestyle and a general state of wellness.

The American Medical Association approves age 11 as ideal for spending some time with the provider alone (Ewulonu, 2021). The provider should also spend some time with the parents, allowing them to share their concerns regarding their child’s behavior. In this case, the parent does not have to be present during the exam. Additionally, it is essential to assess the patient’s overall physical health and address any concerns the parent and the patient have concerning the patient’s health.

A Health Promotion Idea and its Importance

High-risk behavior prevention is an important health promotion tactic, especially among adolescents. Such behaviors include drug and alcohol abuse, and irresponsible sexual activity. Prevention of high-risk behavior protects individuals from venereal diseases and the detrimental effects of drug and alcohol abuse. At this age, adolescent is beginning to explore life and may indulge in behaviors that may put their health at risk, including sexual activity and drug and substance use. The idea is specifically essential for this patient since the mother raised a concern about lousy company, which may influence the adolescent to these behaviors.

Screening Tools

This patient has had declining grades and is often in the wrong company, this is suggestive of substance abuse. Some important screening tools include Screening to Brief Interventions (S2BI) and Brief Screener for Tobacco Alcohol and other Drugs (BSTAD) (Patnode et al., 2020). These can be administered in less than two minutes and classify individuals based on period of substance use (Kuhns et al., 2020). CRAAFT screening tool is also used to assess high-risk alcohol and other substance abuse among adolescents.

Components of an adolescent annual assessment include medical history, physical examination, laboratory screening, emotional and cognitive development. At the age of 11, the patient is not necessarily required to be accompanied by the parent. High-risk behavior prevention is an important health promotion idea, especially among adolescents, due to a higher propensity to engage in such behaviors. Generally, adolescents require a more careful approach during examination and assessment.

Discussion Questions

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, post an initial response to all of the questions in the Discussion Area by the due date assigned. You must respond to two of your classmates’ postings for this discussion.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use the South University Online Library. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial postings. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Cite sources in your responses to other classmates. Complete your participation for this assignment by the end of the week.

You are a Family Nurse Practitioner working in a community health center. You are seeing a 14-year-old adolescent patent for an annual visit. The patient’s mother is also present during the visit and notes that the patient’s grades in school have been declining. Her son is also hanging out with a group of kids that she has concerns about. The mother has concerns for what is going on with her son. Answer the following questions using course resources (texts) and two other evidence-based sources (current guidelines and/or scholarly articles that are within a 3-5 year time frame).

  1. What are the components of an annual exam for an adolescent patient?
  2. Is the mother required to be present during your exam?
  3. Describe 1 health promotion idea that you would discuss with your middle adolescence patient. Why is this idea important?
  4. What are some screening tools that might be of importance in this situation? (hint: do you suspect drug or alcohol abuse here?)
