Deleon Glay (484)-756-0191 deleon.glay1997@gmail.com Personal Statement About two years ago, I had stepped outside of my comfort zone and decided to work in the Healthcare field. During these two years, I have had the opportunity to work alongside both licensed vocational nurses and registered nurses, which gave me the opportunity to shadow these nurses in order to observe how certain procedures are done. The procedures that I have witnessed during my shadowing experience includes, witnessing the administration of insulin shots, oral medications, wound dressings, monitoring catheters, etc. Plus, I obtained my in class certified nursing assistant certification, basic life support, as well as my cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification. Obtaining those certifications has definitely shaped my character as both a caretaker and nursing student. I was able to recognize certain symptoms of an immediate stroke and alert the nurse on duty in order for the right precautions to be taken for the patient that was in my care. The level of care that I have performed and still perform ranges from patients who require minimal care, to others who require much more complex medical monitoring and total care. I have also worked with hospice patients and understand the importance of compassion, comfort, and support for their family as well, during their last phases. Being a little girl in Ghana, I would look at the boys in the village head off to school. As a girl, I was only allowed to stay home and help with chores. I have always had a thirst for learning though. My dad, brother and I emigrated from Ghana to the United States in 2003. At just twelve years old, my father dropped my brother and I off at our aunt Patricia’s and abandoned us. A day after my college move-in date, my aunt was taken to prison for a choice she had made. What should have been a memorable transition into a young woman was immediately put on hold. I returned home to take care of my aunt’s four children in order to prevent them from going into foster care, and also to further continue my education at a nearby community college. I was performing motherly duties, including attending court and doctor appointments, all while working two jobs trying to provide for my family. I witnessed my grade point average drop from a 3.6 to a 2.8. Then, I was faced with homelessness at twenty years old and felt like all odds were against me. Realizing the impact my family had on me, I decided to move to Houston and put my education and myself first. I am currently taking two out of my four last prerequisites with an overall grade point average of 3.3 at the time of this personal statement. While other people might have been tempted to give up in face of the many adversities that I have experienced, I decided to stay optimistic and resilient in pursuing my nursing degree. The role of a nurse is a very noble one. My personal strengths of communication, compassion, as well as trustworthiness make me more than capable in serving in this profession. I’ll be able to clearly communicate with my patients, physicians and family members to ensure my patients’ needs are met. My compassion and trustworthiness will allow me to relate with my patients and comfort them in their time of needs. My weaknesses are emotional attachments and losing the ability to speak French fluently. Unintentional bonds developed between my patients and I also makes it hard when unforeseen events occur. I am actively working on my weaknesses because the role of a nurse is very demanding. As a nurse, I aspire to extend my helping hand to patients from all walks of life. One of my long term goals is to build a couple of clinics in underprivileged communities. I passionately believe that everyone should have access to care. Healthcare to me is not only about saving lives, it is also about changing lives. I plan to obtain my BSN degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch and obtain a long term career in nursing by later obtaining my MSN and DNP. With my previous nursing experiences and the skills that I will gain from your nursing program, I am confident that I have great assets to offer your university.
