NURS 6501: Interprofessional Organizational and Systems Leadership

 Personal Leadership Philosophy

I subscribe to the words of John Wooden, a famous American basketball player and coach, who once said the most influential leadership tool one has is their own example. I believe in steering a team by example. My leadership philosophy has played a central role in my approach to nursing practice and in working with others as it has allowed me to be consistent in my management actions and behaviors, control my reactions to situations, understand my values, and remain accountable. While I am not an appointed leader, I tend to take up a leadership role in projects when others hesitate and my colleagues seek advice whenever they brace challenges in their routine activities. I am looking forward to attaining my Family Nurse Practitioner certification upon graduation, implying that I will be leading medical teams in the formulation of treatment and management plans for a diversity of patient populations; therefore, I seek to improve my clinical reasoning and governance skills Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies.

My personal leadership has seven core values. I believe that an effective nurse leader honors trust, is always respectful, and works hard to accomplish their goals and inspire others to follow the organizational dream. I remain composed and persistent during difficulties; I consider every experience as a learning opportunity, whether at the personal or clinical level; and I value the process of communication from speaking, writing, and listening. Therefore, I strive to lead by example by role modeling the above values and setting an unspoken example in every task that I undertake, including communication style, dressing code, time management, and prioritizing my well-being to reduce the risk of burnout. The above is in line with the findings of Mudallal et al. (2017) study that sought to examine the impact of leader empowering behaviors, demographic traits, and work conditions on nurse burnout. From the above article, it is apparent that enhancing the meaningfulness of work through such leadership behaviors as infusing staff’s tasks with purpose and assigning meaning to individual contributions elevates nurses’ sense of worth and inspires them (Mudallal et al., 2017). Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies I identify with the transformational leadership approach, which according to Lin et al. (2017) contributes substantially to supervisor support. As a transformational leader, I will stimulate my followers to share my vision of being the leading L&D unit by fostering evidence-based maternal and childcare services in the hospital. My mission is to create and steer strong clinical teams that provide patient-centered care and guarantee patient safety in our hospital.

The five most dominant themes of talent from my StrengthsFinder Assessment are input, individualization, relator, strategic, and leaner (Gallup Access, n.d.). What makes me stand out in the input theme is the ability to seek out innovative ideas and plans of visionary people and apply them make mental leaps into the expected future. Within the individualization talent, I am intrigued with the distinctive qualities of individuals enabling me to strike conversations with others with the core purpose of understanding their hopes, successes, goals, experiences, talents, interests, and strengths. Within the strategic theme, I employ language and vocabulary to express innovative ideas and alternative ways to resolve a problem in a team setup. As a talented learner, I have a great desire to learn and continuously improve myself, and lastly, as a talented relator, I find satisfaction in establishing close relationships and working hard with others to accomplish a set goal (Gallup Access, n.d.). Based on the results of my StrengthsFinder, the two core values I would like to strengthen are the capacity to influence and communicate effectively with others. The capacity to communicate effectively is a fundamental skill for nurse leaders. According to Jankelová and  Joniaková (2021), effective communication and influencing skills enable nurse leaders to create and promote positive work environments associated with improved patient outcomes and high staff satisfaction. Assignment: Personal Leadership Philosophies I intend to hone my communication and influencing skills by watching videos, observing my mentors, and attending workshops and seminars on the above subject areas.

Leadership is an important skill that nurses utilize to influence others. Leaders are either born with leadership skills or learn them from their environment. Health organizations that have effective leaders demonstrate excellence in their service provision. Healthcare providers should be provided with opportunities to explore their leadership abilities. This can be achieved through interventions that include delegation and utilization of inter-professional teams. Therefore, this essay examines my leadership philosophy

My Core Values

I believe that leaders should demonstrate specific leadership values in their organizations. One of the leadership values that one should possess is respect. Effective leaders respect others. They respect the ideas, views, diversity, and backgrounds of others in their organizations. Effective leaders also value transparency. They ensure that organizational tasks are undertaken in a manner that allows scrutiny and understanding of the use of resources (Alvinius, 2017). Effective leaders also strive to make a difference in those they lead. They transform others through instilling confidence and ensuring that they develop the right knowledge and skills for their success. The last value that I believe leaders should possess is integrity (Hassmiller & Pulcini, 2020). Leaders should demonstrate integrity in the ethical decisions that they make and fulfill their promises and expectations.

Personal Mission Statement

My mission statement as a leader is to promote the growth and development in those I lead. I wish to ensure that I transform positively the behaviors, knowledge, and attitudes of those I lead. I intend to achieve this goal by recognizing their abilities and providing them the opportunities to explore them. I also intend to lead the as their example. I wish to become their role model in adopting the needed professional behaviors that contribute to their growth and development.

Clifton Strenghts Assessment

The Clifton Strenghts Assessment revealed a number of strengths that describe my leadership abilities. The top two strengths that were identified from the assessment were that I am analytical and deliberative. People who are analytical explore situations before coming up with a conclusion. They collect facts about events to aid in the development of sound decisions. Analytical people are critical and creative thinkers. They do not consider events as they appear but seek to unearth the factors that might affect them. Analytical people also explore the existing alternatives and select one that is associated with optimum benefits to the involved parties. My other strength that became evident from the assessment is that I am deliberative. Deliberative people are careful in what they do. They are vigilant on the approaches to decision-making. They operate on the assumptions that their world is highly unpredictable. As a result, decisions should be made with a consideration of unforeseen events that might affect the situation (Grossman & Valiga, 2020). An effective use of these strengths will enable me to make ethical decisions in my leadership roles.

Analysis of Clifton Strengths Assessment

The effective leadership qualities and talents of nurses and nurse leaders have a significant impact on health care providers. Firms with excellent leadership practices have stronger working relationships, lower employee turnover, fewer conflicts, higher levels of staff engagement, and better resource management, according to research. Fundamental principles that are consistent with their perceptions of what constitutes excellent leadership must be maintained by nursing professionals. Their personal leadership ethos should serve as the foundation for these values. Nursing leadership advice may be useful when faced with difficult decisions (Asamani et al., 2016). This post will go over my leadership philosophy, core beliefs, mission statement, and Clifton Strengths Assessment results. The post will go into detail about how I changed my behavior and achieved my goals.

Personal Philosophy and Core Values Statement

The leader’s own leadership philosophy influences their behavior and prompts responses to individuals and situations. Imperatively, my leadership philosophy is based on the use of strong core values to set expectations for those I serve, as well as the modeling of transformational leadership behavior that leads to the realization of a predetermined vision and connects to the overall achievement of shared purposes and objectives.

The results of my Assessment show what kind of leader I am and the l The results indicated that; I possess a strong belief theme. I am a believer who beliefs in myself and others. A believer leader is dependable and easily trusted in the workplace. Secondly, the result indicates that I possess the strategic theme (Clifton strengths finder, 2020). A strategic leader can develop effective strategies and follow the right route. As a strategic leader, I look at possibilities in everything and discard paths that might lead to resistance.  Thirdly, the results indicate that I possess the relator theme. This fact means that as a leader I have good relationships with people I know and I easily create relationships with new people I meet in the workplace easily understand other people beliefs, goals and fears. I encourage the deepening of a genuine relationship and am ready to risk within the relationship to achieve great results and develop closeness. The result of the also showed that I have the self-assurance theme in which means that I am a leader who has faith in my strengths. I always choose the right decision despite a hard situation. I stand for what I believe and am not easily convinced by outside forces.  Am more self-confident and no one makes decisions for me because I believe in myself. The fifth result shows that I possess an adaptability theme. I am a leader who easily adapts to changes in the environment and I adjust myself accordingly (Clifton strengths finder, 2020). I easily adapt to situations and I am a flexible leader who is always productive in any situation.

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.

The courses will impart me with the knowledge and skills that I need to be an effective leader. I will also attend seminars and training on effective leadership to build on my abilities in these areas. Therefore, I believe that an exploration of these alternatives will enable me to strengthen the above behaviors for my professional and personal development.

RE: Instructor’s Discussion – Week 5: “Your Leadership Profile”

Response I

Hi Kathy, reading your discussion thread was enjoyable. I find it incredible that these tests can correctly indicate the kind of leaders we are. The results of my poll are pretty correct, and I saw that learner and Achiever are two of our common characteristic themes. Achievers are productive individuals who finish things and optimistic leaders with great backgrounds who disperse energy. Successful people are the best motivators, delegators, and networkers (Rath, 2007). They are also outstanding networkers and communicators.

It is great to know that The Relator characteristic values close ties with others and gets excellent delight from working hard with friends to accomplish a task (Gallup, 2022). I frequently have friendships where we hold one another accountable, ultimately motivating us to reach our objectives. In the field of nursing, developing collaborative relationships is crucial.

The traits of an achiever help to explain my motivation; I firmly believe that everyone should work to realize their full potential; as a result, I should cross something off my list every day. I think I have failed for the day if I do not accomplish anything daily. I wish I could let go of my self-criticism, unwind, and enjoy life less under pressure (Hébert, 2018). Ultimately, I think having goals or a list of things to get done daily is essential.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.

Hello Kathy,

There are 4 main groups that make up the 34 strengths, and those groups are strategic thinking, relationship building, influencing, and executing (Gallup, 2022). Three out of five of my most dominant strengths are all a part of the relationship-building aspect of the Clifton strength assessment. If you knew me, it would be no secret that I do not like conflict, especially in the workplace. I do tend to be the “Can’t we all just get along” nurse of the group.

You and I both chose learner as one of our strengths to improve on. I know we learn new information daily, but I am the type of person that wants to know why something works the way it does. I think knowledge is very valuable in every profession, but in nursing, it can literally be a life-or-death situation. Improving our strength as a learner can also improve our skills as a leader (Broome & Marshall, 2021).

Great post!

Cindy

RE: Response #1 – Kathy Davis

Hi Kathy. I agree with you about nurses’ personalities being similar when it comes to learning, being responsible and being able to relate to others. These are awesome top traits to have. As nurses we all need to be able to be responsible when it comes to our own self and when it comes to caring for our patients. We are responsible for patient safety and good patient outcomes as well as being responsible for making smart money decisions with supplies and staffing (Juda, 2021). I would agree that nurses who are working hard to achieve their goals are also going to be ones who will be open to change and will be participating in the success of their department (Martins Abelha et al., 2018). It was definitely interesting to see what our strengths came out as according to the test and think it could be a cool way to help with my future growth as a leader.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS

Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
