Group Leadership Skills Pre-Assessment
By completing the “Self-Assessment of Leadership Skills” on pages 45-47 of the Schneider Corey et al. book, I was able to identify my strengths and areas for improvement (2018). I gave myself high marks in the questioning and modeling categories based on my results. I have experience working with people who have been given a mental health diagnosis at the bachelor’s level in both my current and previous full-time professions. Because case management is a part of my job, I am constantly questioning my patients to ensure that my questions are pertinent to their therapeutic process or goals. I’ve also worked as a recovery support specialist, where my main responsibility was to help clients achieve their treatment and recovery goals by acting as a positive role model.

Active listening and linking are two areas where I believe I can improve. I’ve known for a long time that I needed to work on my listening skills. Being the listener can be difficult for me at times because I prefer to be the one speaking when I connect with others. I am also easily distracted, particularly when using services such as Zoom or telemedicine. I want to improve my listening skills, by encouraging my curiosity and limiting interruptions. I decided to focus on linking as another area for improvement due to my lack of knowledge. I’d like to learn how to do this through training. Gather the appropriate group and establish clear expectations from the start. In general, I am new to group counseling (Corey et al., 2018). It was difficult for me to evaluate my performance due to my limited prior experience in group leadership. Although I am self-aware, there are times when others notice something in me that I am unable to recognize. I’m excited to begin this course, grow as a counselor, and use my skills to affect social change in my community.
