Child abuse is any deliberate act of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, including acts of negligence, perpetrated by a person responsible for caring for a child. Children under 18 years who lack reasonable care and protection from their parents, guardians, or relatives are regarded to be abused or neglected. Adolescents with developmental disorders (13-18 years) will best serve the population’s needs since they are at a high risk of abuse and neglect and greatly undergo psychological abuse (Strathearn et al., 2020). Thus, adolescents with developmental disorders who have experienced psychological abuse may benefit from counseling.

These adolescents often face rejection, isolation, criticism, and being ignored by their caregivers and relatives, which erode their self-esteem. Psychological abuse causes marked withdrawal in adolescents and increases the risk of sleep disturbances, eating disturbances, anxiety, and depressive disorders (Mehta et al., 2023). Mentally disabled adolescents who face psychological abuse tend to exhibit aggression, temper tantrums, impulsiveness, neurotic or conduct disorders, phobias, and avoidant behaviors.

Ahn et al. (2022) provide information on the etiology, risk factors, and clinical presentations of child maltreatment to give clinicians better insight into child abuse and neglect. The article explains that maltreated children/ adolescents have a high risk of developing psychiatric disorders like major depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), personality disorders, substance abuse, and psychosis over the course of their lifetime. Thus, it is vital for clinicians to know the etiology and risk factors of maltreatment to prevent and alleviate victimization from abuse and neglect in adolescents. Ahn et al. (2022) recommend integrating medications with psychotherapy or interpersonal therapy, including learning cognitive and behavioral strategies to manage ongoing stressors in children. They should be combined to prevent recurrence and manage severe psychiatric symptoms like suicidality.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Corey, Corey, & Corey (2018) text, p. 153 to begin designing your group proposal. You may also use the questions on p. 171 to guide your thinking.
  • Review the School of Counseling’s Key Professional Dispositions, paying special attention to Professional Behaviors 3 and 12; Interpersonal Behaviors 4, 7, 13, 15, and 16; and Intrapersonal Behaviors 1, 7, 13, 20, and 22.
  • Refer to the Walden Library resources on keyword searching in this week’s Learning Resources to assist with your search strategies.

This week, you will develop the rationale and objectives for your group proposal. This will require you to consider and respond to the following:

  • Identify a population who may benefit from your proposed group. Explain the prevalence of the problem and associated risk factors.
  • Identify the type of group that you believe will best serve the population’s need.
  • Find initial support from the current literature for your proposal (these should be current, peer-reviewed journal articles applicable to professional counseling). What strategies have been shown to be effective with your proposed population?
  • State your initial objectives/goals in measurable terms.

Each member of your cohort group will post your suggestion for a population which might benefit from a counseling group. You will first review the professional journals on the mental health concerns (risk factors) facing the population of your choice. Based on your readings, you will post a Rationale which defines the population and the mental health concerns (the Risk Factors) for your chosen population.) Include the goal of the group and at least one objective in measurable terms which moves the group toward the goal. List at least one reference from a current journal in APA 7th edition which supports your rationale.

Example of a Student’s Initial Post:  Susie Scholar Cohort Z Proposal Suggestion:

Hello, Everyone~

I am suggesting a group for female adolescents who have been bullied. Below please find my rationale, identified risk factors, and references. I look forward to seeing your ideas.

Rationale, Risk Factors, and References

Many adolescents between the ages of 13-18 suffer from severe mental health-related symptoms (Prochaska, Le, Baillargeon, & Temple, 2016).  Adolescents are specifically vulnerable to associated trauma due to their developmental processes.  Teens may exhibit avoidant or maladaptive behaviors due to on-going emotional distress.  This supports my finding that bullying and the ensuing emotional distress may result in school refusal, anxiety, and truancy.  Due to the high prevalence of teen bullying, the group will focus on a population of high school females between the ages of 14 and 16 who have experienced bullying.  Risk factors identified within this group include anxiety, depression, and social-emotional problems (Klomek, et al., 2011).  Other points of discussion may include exploration of low self-esteem, feelings of social incompetence, behavioral difficulties, and school avoidance.

Utilization of professional mental health services related to population-level screening for anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder among public high school students. Community Mental Health Journal, 52(6), 691-700. doi:10.1007/s10597-015-9968-z

Identify a population who may benefit from your proposed group. Explain the
prevalence of the problem and associated risk factors. (No children’s or addiction
groups please.)
• Identify the type of group that you believe will best serve the population’s need.
• Each member should select at least one recent (published in the past 5–10
years), peer-reviewed journal article in APA formatting that supports the rationale
for the group. Provide a brief summary (1–3 sentences) for your article(s)
explaining why it supports your rationale. Be sure to include the Walden Library
permalink or DOI so your colleagues and faculty may review the article.
• If possible, find articles that are specific to group counseling for your chosen
population.
• State your initial objectives/goals in measurable terms (What can group members
expect to change as a result of participating in your group?)
