Presenting Problem

In case study 1, Chloe, an 8-year-old African American girl, was brought to therapy by her foster mother since she is now in foster care owing to worries about physical and sexual abuse. The patient most likely has post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the information provided. So, to assist Chloe in overcoming trauma-related challenges, such as child abuse, I would suggest Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT) (Salemi et al., 2020).

Empirical Evidence

Childhood abuse and neglect, in addition to single-event traumas, are widespread in the United States and across the globe. These traumas cause complex PTSD, which is made worse by relational trauma between the caregiver and the child. According to Salemi et al. (2020), a significant number of individuals aged below 18 have taken part in research on TF-CBT, and a total of 16 randomized trials have demonstrated substantial clinical progress. Brumley et al. (2021), also state that studies done in the aftermath of therapy have shown that profits may last for six months, a year, and even two years. Consequently, TF-CBT is backed by research and shown to be effective in treating PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms, behavioral issues, sexualized behaviors, shame, trauma-related negative cognitions, interpersonal trust, and social competence (Kameoka et al., 2020). My own experience has shown me that TF-CBT is successful in treating PTSD in young people like Chloe.

Case Conceptualization

Based on the above findings, I am confident in my proposed intervention of TF-CBT for Chloe given her history of both physical and sexual abuse.A traumatic experience is very unpleasant, terrifying, or damaging (Kameoka et al., 2020). The emotional repercussions of trauma may last for a very long period. Trauma in children may result in PTSD. Chloe is still very young and has gone through so much suffering. Children may explain their experiences, express their emotions, and get support in therapy. Chloe will be able to discuss the experiences she has had. She will gain coping and calming abilities via TF-CBT, which will help her in her day-to-day activitiesBrumley et al., 2021. She will become more courageous and self-assured as a result of this. The therapeutic process should include the caregivers as well. This will make it possible for the foster mother to get guidance on how to assist Chloe. The Foster mother will get training on how to listen to encourage Chloe to communicate, open up, and feel connected.

Dr. Foster’s starter
For your discussion this week, you will choose one of the case studies that were developed for the final project.  This assignment is not part of your final project, but as you practice conceptualizing the case you choose, it will help you prepare for conducting your literature review for the final project.

Now, you may be wondering whether you can use the case study and intervention that you choose this week for your final project.  The answer is yes.  But, you may also use this week as simply a practice run.  So, if you choose a case study and an intervention and in your search you find that there is really not much research out there or your search produces limited or outdated results, you can absolutely choose a different case and/or intervention for your final project.

So, take a look at the case studies and choose one.  Then read the case study carefully and identify your client.  Some of the case studies have multiple potential clients, so as you review the case study, think about which one you would want to work with.  Now, choose an intervention that you would be interested in using with your identified client.

Here are some examples to help guide you:

In case study 1, you could choose Non Directive Play therapy for use with Chloe and her anxiety.

In case study 2, you could choose Cognitive Behavior Therapy to use with Jim and his grief.

In case study 3, you could choose Narrative Therapy for use with Natasha and her interpersonal conflict.

In case study 4, you could choose EMDR for use with Jared and his PTSD.

Your first step is to conduct a search of the Walden library and find a current, peer reviewed article that includes a study that addresses your intervention and disorder and is related to your population.

Here is a template to guide your postings:

Presenting Problem

Open your post by identifying the case study you selected, the client, the mental health issue to be addressed and the intervention you have chosen to apply to your client. You may not have enough information to form a formal diagnostic impression, but you can generate a general focus for your treatment (depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, etc.).  Based on this general focus, choose an intervention you are interested in (CBT, EMDR, DBT, play therapy, mindfulness, etc.).

Empirical Evidence

After locating an article that includes a research study that relates to the case (intervention should match and population and symptoms/diagnosis should be related). Explain the findings of the study in terms of the intervention being a good treatment option.  Once you describe the findings, explain how the outcomes of the study matched or differed from what you expected to find.

Case Conceptualization

Explain whether the research study that you reviewed impacted your perception about the appropriateness of the intervention you chose and whether you would opt to use your chosen intervention to treat the client/symptoms in your case study.

The goal of this assignment is case conceptualization. You are establishing first impressions of the client and making initial treatment planning decisions about potential treatment options. Your post should offer a clinical impression of a published research study and give your interpretation of whether what you learn might be a good approach to take with your chosen client.

Remember to cite content from your article in your post and provide a reference citation at the end. Attach a PDF of the article that you use to your post as an attachment. (You will need to download the article and save it to your computer to attach. And I have provided a video to help you with that!  Do not post a link as your peers will need to be able to easily open your article to make their responses.)

After your main post, you will need to respond to 2 peers and explain whether you would choose to utilize the intervention that your peer recommends for use with the case study they chose.
