Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

Nursing is concerned with continuous care improvement and a great determination to achieve high quality. As a result, many healthcare programs are designed and implemented targeting specific groups or the broad population. These groups could be patients, communities, and healthcare professionals. Inevitably, the outcomes of healthcare programs depend on design and implementation. Maximum attention is crucial in these areas to ensure success and sustainability. The purpose of this interview script is to provide appropriate responses for a healthcare program within my practice while reflecting on the nurse’s role in the program’s design and implementation.

Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?

The current workplace is highly stressful for nursing professionals. Therefore, a stress management program should be prioritized by leaders and staff. Like many other programs, a stress management program has some costs. They include materials, labor, implementation, and human resources. For instance, implementing the program requires staff to be trained on stress management techniques corresponding to their stress levels and work environments. Research shows that workplace stress is multidimensional, and the program will improve coping, job satisfaction, and patient care outcomes. The multidimensional causes of stress include high workload, workplace incivility, a lack of social support, and high expectations (Hosseini Moghaddam et al., 2022). Improved coping and job satisfaction are critical for nurse retention within the evolving practice. Nurse retention programs prevent turnover and the high costs associated with workforce replacement.

Who is your target population?

The most appropriate target population for the stress management program is nurses in all departments. Irrespective of where they work, nurses are highly vulnerable to stress, which has far-reaching consequences on nurses’ quality of life and ability to provide patient care. Babapour et al. (2022) found that workplace stress affects an individual’s physical, emotional, and psychological performance. It is the same with nurses since stress hampers their health and well-being amid high demand for humane and compassionate care. According to Shah et al. (2021), stress is a leading cause of nurse burnout. Therefore, nurses should be empowered to avoid reduced performance in their critical role.

What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?

For the stress management program’s design, the nurse’s input role includes suggestions about the program’s scope, activities, outcomes optimization, and success determination. The scope and type of activities would depend on the intensity of workplace stress. For instance, simple exercises, health breaks, and reading can help nurses to manage less intensive stress. However, chronic stress requires advanced management techniques, such as resilience training, guided meditation, and mindfulness breathing (Scheuch et al., 2021; Yıldırım & Çiriş Yıldız, 2022). Nurses can use their experience with stress and coping to recommend how a robust program should be designed.

What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?

The advocacy role is primarily centered on improving the care environment and ensuring patient needs are addressed. While stressing the importance of advocacy, Stamps et al. (2021) highlighted that nursing environments require leaders who advocate for nurses’ safety and welfare as they provide care under challenging conditions. Guided by this principle, my role as a nurses’ advocate is to ensure nurses’ needs under difficult conditions are addressed. Input into design decisions includes recommending when and how nurses can use stress management techniques. I can also impact design by supporting the program through peer-reviewed research. Doing so can rationalize it, considering it is time and resource intensive.

What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?

Nurses should be actively involved in program implementation to enhance success. As part of the wider healthcare team, the nurse can motivate their colleagues to embrace the program, provide material resources and skills where necessary, and be actively involved in training and outcomes evaluation. Broadly, implementation entails executing a program to realize its goals. As Kisku et al. (2019) posited, design precedes implementation since the design is about defining the program’s layout. On the other hand, implementation is about actualizing the design ideas. An appropriate example in this program is recommending weekly two-hour training for nurses on stress management. That involves design. Assembling a team and resources to ensure nurses receive the training is implementation.

Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?

Program implementation should be collaborative. Therefore, organizational leaders, departmental leaders, selected mental and physical health experts, and nurses should work together to implement the program. As McLaney et al. (2022) noted, collaboration fosters teamwork and allows shared decision-making in nursing practice. Leaders are crucial for establishing the appropriate climate for the program and support it with resources. Experts’ views are crucial for effective program design and ensuring roles are assigned to the right individuals.

Conclusion

Healthcare programs target different populations with varying needs. Nurses are a critical group due to their central role in primary care provision. Due to their vulnerability to workplace stress, a healthcare program to help them manage stress should be prioritized. Such a program is vital to improving nurses’ coping and job satisfaction hence enabling them to provide high-quality care. For better outcomes, progressive assessment to address emerging gaps is crucial for a sustainable program.

Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation

As their names imply, the honeyguide bird and the honey badger both share an affinity for honey. Honeyguide birds specialize in finding beehives but struggle to access the honey within. Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives. The honeyguide bird guides honey badgers to newly discovered hives. Once the honey badger has ransacked the hive, the honey guide bird safely enters to enjoy the leftover honey.

Much like honeyguide birds and honey badgers, nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can—and should—collaborate to design effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table that make them natural partners to professionals with different specialties. When nurses take the requisite leadership in becoming involved throughout the healthcare system, these partnerships can better design and deliver highly effective programs that meet objectives.

In this Assignment, you will practice this type of leadership by advocating for a healthcare program. Equally as important, you will advocate for a collaborative role of the nurse in the design and implementation of this program. To do this, assume you are preparing to be interviewed by a professional organization/publication regarding your thoughts on the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
