Why Nurses’ Shortage is a Problem
Nurses are directly involved in patient care and play a critical role in healthcare as the largest part of the health profession. The shortage of nurses in a facility can result in overworking and burnout of the existing nurses as the few existing ones must work longer hours and cover more shifts. This can lead to exhaustion, decreased productivity, and reduced job satisfaction, leading to higher nurse turnover rates (Haddad et al., 2023). A shortage of nurses can also compromise the quality of healthcare given to the patients due to the likeliness of the patient to wait for long hours, receive less personalized care, and have a higher risk of medical errors.
Additionally, nurses’ shortages can affect patient outcomes. According to Haegdorens et al. (2019), patients in understaffed hospitals have a higher risk of complications, longer hospital stays, and increased mortality rates. Nurses are responsible for monitoring patients’ conditions, providing timely interventions, and ensuring proper medication administration, among other critical tasks; therefore, addressing the shortage of nurses in health facilities is a critical issue that requires a comprehensive change project.
Internal and External Stakeholders and Their Impact on Change Project
The change project addressing the shortage of nurses in health facilities involves various stakeholders who could impact its success. These stakeholders can be classified as internal and external stakeholders. Internal stakeholders are those who work within the organization, while external stakeholders are those who have a relationship with the organization but are not part of it. Nurses are the primary internal stakeholders in the change project, as the shortage of nurses directly impacts them. Their involvement in the project is essential as they can provide insights into their challenges and suggestions on how to address the shortage. Other internal stakeholders are unit managers, staffing coordinators and caregivers who are essential in the provision of patient care and are affected by the shortage of nurses.
The external stakeholders include; patients and their families, regulatory agencies and professional associations. Patients and their families are affected by the quality of care provided due to nurses shortage; therefore, are essential stakeholders in the change project. Additionally, regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission or Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) set standards that healthcare facilities must meet and can impact the change project by enforcing regulations (Young & Smith, 2022). Furthermore, professional associations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) represent nurses’ interests and can advocate for resources and policy changes to address the shortage of nurses.
The Importance of Stakeholders in Change Projects: Understanding Their Positive and Negative Impacts
Stakeholders play a vital role in the success of a change project, as their impact can be both positive and negative. In addressing the shortage of nurses in healthcare facilities, stakeholders such as nurses, patients and their families, regulatory agencies, and professional associations can have specific impacts. Nurses can provide valuable feedback and engagement in training programs, but resistance to change and fear of job loss may have negative impacts.
Patients and their families benefit from improved quality of care but may have negative experiences if the project’s strategies do not lead to meaningful change. Regulatory agencies can enforce regulations but may also impose fines and penalties. Professional associations can provide support, but competing priorities and disagreements on effective strategies may be negative impacts. Effective communication and stakeholder collaboration is crucial to mitigate negative impacts and ensure project success.
