In previous chapters we learned that there are multiple theories. Theories are difficult to define because they are so complex. Theories are defined as one or more relatively concrete and specific concepts that are derived from a conceptual model (Butts & Rich, 2018). Theories can exist in any discipline from politics to nursing. For example, one nursing theory that is very influential in nursing practice is Pender’s Health Promotion Model (HPM). This nursing theory is one of the widely used models to plan for and change unhealthy behaviors and promote health (Khodaveisi, Omidi, Farokhi & Soltanian, 2017). The HPM is based on social cognitive theory in which cognitive-perceptual factors such as benefits or barriers influence engagement in health-promoting behaviors (Khodaveisi et al., 2017). Modifying factors such as demographic characteristics, interpersonal influences, and behavioral factors are considered to interact with each other to influence cognitive perceptual processes (Khodaveisi et al., 2017). HPM leads the way to practices for promoting health and has been stated that previous behaviors and health responsibility are influential in individual’s behavior (Ersin & Bahar, 2017).
Another theory is the Utilitarianism theory. Although this is a non-nursing theory it is still is important. This theory states that actions are judged by their utility; these actions are evaluated based on the usefulness (Butts & Rich, 2018). When using this theory, it promotes the greatest good and to minimize harm to people (Butts & Rich, 2018). Practitioners can bring these separate theories together to provide meaningful patient care because both theories have ethical roots. Ethics is a big component in nursing. In ethics, nurses are responsible for advocating, educating, and doing no harm to patients to make sure they receive the most optimum care. When a practitioner uses the HPM he/she is trying to help the patient better themselves by giving them ideas about how to improve their health and promote wellness whether it be anything from diabetes to oral health. When a practitioner uses the utilitarianism theory they are helping them in any and every way they can and not causing harm to the patient. Both of these theories combined can be used every day because it is important in nursing practice.
